Chapter 3: 3

Multiple entries didn't seem to be a problem for Sahari, since both of her artistic endeavours with pumpkins didn't look like they belonged in the same category, and, for most people, two entries were more than sufficient enough as far as competition was concerned. Sahari, though, didn't feel she was done just yet, even if Kalina or someone else might say she was. The long-leg wanted to make all the things, and to do that, she needed more pumpkins.

But all the fruits that could've been used for artistic purposes were all gone now, leaving only the rejects behind, and she wasn't going to use those!

Unless...

Unless she decided to be like Luath and get into pumpkin carving as well as pumpkin painting...

Hey. That sounded like fun! And it didn't matter if the gourd was ugly to start with. The purpose was to turn it into something much nicer to look at.

Picking out the pumpkin she'd need to whittle away on was much, much easier than finding one to paint on, and within minutes she was chewing away at her selection.

Which seemed to wiggle every time she chewed on it for more than a few seconds.

How very odd...

Maybe she was biting too hard.

Yes. That was why.

Gentle bites. Less wiggling.

Right?

Nope.

Even gentle nips that barely made much of a mark on the surface wasn't enough to get it to stop moving. If anything, it just made it move even more.

Okay. This was weird, Sahari noted as she stepped back once the fruit had switched from wiggling to hopping.

Lots of hopping.

It was jumpy as a spring frog.

And then it turned around.

A split formed in its rind, and then the thing started grinning at her!

Sahari let out a frightened shriek as the grinning pumpkin started trying to bite her!

Noooooo!

More shrieks, and then Sahari was running for it.

No more pumpkins for her today!
