Chapter 1: The End at the Beginning

The bordered walls of stone layered together to form the outcropping and guarded ring of the angels' own lands, before giving way to the forests and undergrowth that led out into the demons' territory further out. It was along one such section, that a young trainee was venturing from the nearest outpost, together with her mentor, Etias, an angel of higher rank in the forces, who would be overseeing her first mission. There had been rumors of some minor demons snooping about the forest nearby, and they were setting out to investigate, while also scouting the area for any signs of the truth of the matter. As they touched ground, it was noticeably peaceful in the forest nearest the wall, but they began to walk deeper into the tree line. Hidden in the shadows of the forest spike-tailed figures followed them. Small imps kept watch as they moved around them.

Etias was wary but silent as they went further into the forest, keeping a watchful eye out for any trouble or signs of anything else. The young woman kept close, just off to the right of his side, and fell into stride with him. Unsure of what to look for though, she just tried to be observant and focused on following. Her wings were smaller then his and pure white, while his were a dark grey, edged and looming above his shoulders, but tucked out of the way of branches. Hers' on the other hand poked out a bit more and were softer. They finally came across a foot path where he had her stop in the open space, as he tried to decide what direction to head in next, as they reached the clearing, stepping out in it.

The red eyes of the imps peered through the forest at the clearing near them two, seemingly waiting. Soon birds flew off and a loud roar was heard along with footsteps. Etias peered off in the direction of the roar. "What the - ??" The young woman also turned at the sound.

Behind them, moving out of the forest, a large ogre carrying a tree trunk growled.

"Careful!" Etias warned her. He motioned for her to fly, sending her up into the air, while he formed a ball of white light in his hands, before tossing it at the Ogre, readying to defend them.

It hit the ogre in the face as he groaned and tried to wipe it way but was burned. Now, he snarled and roared then swung rapidly to Etias in a rage.

Etias formed a small shield of light on one arm, bracing against the blows to it, as he defended himself. With his free hand, he turned the white light into fire, and send it shooting at the ogre as spears of flame straight through the shield.

The strikes gashed into the ogre hitting it all at once as it roared out and fell over burning. The imps watching fled as the ogre breathed its last breath and faded away into dust.

Etias breathed a small sigh of relief, letting down his shield as it disappeared and he looked at where the ogre had been. "Alright, Mia, you can come down now." She landed once more with a small nod.

"What do you think made the ogre come here? Could it behind the demon sighting?" She asked.

A roar in the distance was heard as the ground shook.

Etias shook his head. "No. But we'll likely find out what is. Let's go." He flew above the tree line as both followed the sound of the roar.

An arm flew past him of a demon as it roared with red eyes down at a man who looked to it. The dark wings fluttered a bit as he sighed. "I'm cleaning up their mess.."

Etias blinked, focused on the scene before them as he hovered in the air above. Mia, on the other hand, yelped at bit seeing the arm fly past them.

The demon quickly regrew its arm and charged at him. He dodged its fist as it smashed into the ground and swung his wing upward as it slashed through the demon in one stroke. The monster roared as it faded away and he turned his back to it. "The foolish beast, you were unlucky to be pushed to the top."

Etias let out a small whistle. "Not bad. You took care of that demon well enough. But who the heck are you?" He called over to the figure.
