Lyrics dropped from my head while listening to New Model Army and thinking of the time that had passed between the song's writing and what's happened then, and thinking of how much progress could have been made in the problems that were pointed out in it, and how much hasn't been made. And other little frustrations have crept in, and so on.

Well it's been twenty years
And what do we find
What kind of progress
Have we made in this time?

The plutonic conspiracy, isn't that a ball?
And we *did* bring down the Berlin Wall
But metaphors have lives of their own
And they stretch pretty far
Hey, who else remembers the electric car?
Whatever happened
To the electric car?

The howling wolf has eaten the trees
Its true brothers are nowhere to be seen
Loss is our currency, peace is a lie
I can't find my brother
He's gone to the sky

And the first birds take cover today
When the birds of government fly
And even No Man's Land is gold
When it's the only land to be had
And metaphors have worlds of their own
Where they grow fat and glad
Hey, who else remembers the electric car?
Whatever happened
To the electric car?

The days are long
The Master Race is free
And it's been a while
Since I've seen
A single
Growing
Tree

So where did they take them?
What took them apart?
Whatever happened
To the electric car?
