Crocuta crotalus

Posted Aug 11, 2007, 8:11:03 PM UTC

Slithering through the darkness of my dreams on nacreous scales, it comes. The hiss and crackle of dying vegetation in the poison dripping from it’s scorpion sting, is nearly drowned out by the maniacal giggling that seems to come from all directions. Run blindly in your nightmares from the sight of those lambent eyes…
Too late….
Ok melodramatic to the max...but fun (now that I'm awake, that is). I love hyenas, but the spotted hyena's laugh is downright creepy on a dark night. The rattlesnake body and scorpion sting..., well, ask my subconsious, I have no clue. Just a nightmare I had of being chased by this thing, so of course, I had to make a sketch of it the instant I woke up.

Scratchboard FTW! This is an awesome scratchboard piece, and I never thought about using watercolor on scratchboard before. Big Smile

    The details are amazing.

The texture of this is absolutely wonderful. Is that due to the scratchboard? It seems to add to the frightening aspect of the image, how it's real looking and yet so nightmarish. Really excellent details in the scales, the fur, the face... everything! The dripping poison is also a nice touch, seeming to glow with a luminescent threat. Also the eyes are fantastic! The subtle shift from light to darker green makes them glow and also makes them look quite menacing.
I wouldn't want this beast in MY nightmares!
