Reighmund grew up in the marshland town of Healing Hill, named after the rare medicinal herbs that grow up through the cobblestones. He loved to wander the marshes and draw pictures of what he saw in his self-bound sketchbook made of scrap paper from the family paper mill, and he became adept at identifying the local plants. Rather than working at the mill, he found himself a job grinding herbs at the local apothecary, but his family soon put an end to that and gave him a position at the family business.

When he was 18, his parents arranged a marriage for him with a local boatbuilder's daughter. He was not interested in marriage, and promptly left town, taking nothing with him but his sketchbook and charcoals, the clothes on his back, and a jar of homemade pickles that he strapped to his belt. Now he travels the land, researching rare plants in the hope of publishing a book, though he doesn't expect it will ever be finished.
