Duncan's eart magic reflects deeply on his mental state. The worse his mind is, the more impurities the minerals will have. This drawing shows that Duncan made some crystaline stars shortly after he left home, but not before he had his first encounter with Cassandra, with his mental state being significantly clearer without the pressure of his family.
