One thing I do is color in layers. It's a good way to get different colors that you don't have, and fills in more white space. I can sometimes get a "marker effect" by doing that and pressing hard enough (hence the hand-killing).

Lol, I have more colored pencils than I can count 
You should've seen my friend's face when I showed him. I do mix colors, particulary is I want to get a tanned appearance on some of my characters.
And I normally don't press hard on the colored pencil, 'cause it's a pain to keep it sharp

Yea, keeping them sharp is an annoyance I face, especially since half the time when I sharpen them, they break. X_x This is why I call them crappy. But I tolerate. ^_^;
