Well, doing detailed backgrounds can be pretty boring. But with tools like markers, it's usually better no background than quick background, I think.
Have you tried combining your liners and markers with watercolours? If you wan't to stick to traditional media, these are the ones which can cover wide spaces and actually look pretty cool.

Generally I use watercolours for bgrounds, you'll see in some of my works I'll post in future here; sometimes I use markers as you've seen Maybe my bgrounds aren't the best, but again, the characters are more important for me... However, recently, I'll color my bgrounds digitally (simple plain colour, nothing special). Again, thank you for your comment.
