Hm... As things stand in the show his crush on her is kinda cute, but not going anywhere. She is, as far as we can tell, a grown mare - living on her own, has a business and a position of national responsibility - and he's something between one of her best friends' very young little brother and adopted son. That doesn't really work for a two-sided romance.

Outside of the show, though, I could definitely see it as a possibility - depending on how Dragons age relative to Ponies, and I'm assuming at this point that the dragons in various stages of growth who were still articulate in the Dragon migration eps means the crazed greed-growth thing is something like a freak magic outlier rather than a consistent representation of How Growing Dragons Work - he MIGHT be able to reach maturity during her lifespan, or in fanfic maybe we could hypothesize the Elements prolonging their bearers' lives to keep them around while they're needed, or a Rarity!Alicorn AU or something - there are ways they could both be grown enough for it not to be weird for her to fall for him in return. I don't think interspecies romance is totally off the table in a world where so many different creatures are all still People, although short of magical intervention a species gap that large would probably complicate them ever having kids - and there's a certain amount of poetic logic to the idea of a magical jewel-finder and a Dragon.

And how do YOU feel about RariSpike?

I was never into it. It's like you said, Rarity is a mature young female unicorn with her own business and he's still baby dragon with just a crush.

Plus Rarity uses his feelings for her to get him to do what she wants. Someday she will feel guilty for that.

I still think that she does care for him, but I hope that she'll let him down easy.

Or maybe someday that Spike will get over this and probably find someone new, like another pony, or another dragon, or griffon, or a phoenix.

Maybe it's because I'm tired of seeing fan art about them together.

Well, canon doesn't give us a whole lot of romance that's spelled out in capital letters, and shippers tend to take what they can get. :p And I do think that in the future, depending on how he grows up, it's not out of the question. But I like to see other options explored for them in fanworks - Dragon OCs for Spike, Canterlot nobles or fellow-artists or other members of the Mane 6 for Rarity.

...Don't think I'd go phoenix for Spike - they're less People-like than the other options. They MIGHT be People, but I haven't seen strong evidence of it? Like as far as we can tell, Philomena, or Peewee's parents, have been more in the dog-to-dolphin/octopus range - Very Smart animals with a lot of personality and some strategic thinking, but not sure about their level of self-awareness and interpersonal communication. Opinions? Do you think phoenixes are People in the series in the same way that a Pony/Dragon/Griffin/Buffalo/Yak is a Person?

Actually, I find it a little weird on review that Fluttershy was so surprised Spike could talk - she's an animal specialist, is Dragons being People not actually that common knowledge? Is that just because Dragon colonies tend to be so isolated, or are most Dragons you encounter in Pony territory the greed-grown sort, or what's going on?

I will admit that my "I could maybe see it someday" attitude towards RariSpike is as much because some fic writers are talented enough to sell almost anything as because of actual viability. Wink

Well Fluttershy has that fear of dragons, but only full-grown dragons.

Hm... That's a point. Maybe she heard some Scary Dragon Stories as a little filly and never bothered to research them further because of the intimidation factor. And the sort of foals who might tell scary stories about dragons probably wouldn't bother to include the "and they are people" part, yeah?

That sounds about right. What I am worry about is what will happen if Fluttershy and Spike realized that someday he will grow up. Will she be afraid of him? Would they stop being friends?

She might be scared when she realizes initially. But... I can't help thinking that if she watches him grow up slowly, it won't be the same kind of fear as for a Suddenly Adult dragon? Like - she knows who he is. She will've been there for every birthday along the way. Listened as his voice changes. Even if she feels a shiver sometimes looking at a Wall of Purple Scales, I don't know if she can go from seeing Spike to seeing him as Not-Spike-Actually-Scary-Dragon. But I guess part of that depends on the nature of the fear. If it's like a full-on phobia... I don't know how they'll deal.

Not unless she decides to try to get over her fear.
