Chance Encounter

Drawn a bit over a year ago in celebration of the completion of my first fantasy novel! It took me ten years to write the whole thing. Fortunately, I'm a little faster at writing now.

As an infant, Firal was left at the Kirban Temple to be trained in the way of mages. She's never known her parents, but that's not unusual; it's not uncommon for mages to leave their children behind while they carry on with their duties to the world. She longs for something more than the temple, but she's afraid of the unfamiliar, unable to break away from her comfort zone. Instead, she answers her need for adventure with explorations of the ruins of the old labyrinth outside the temple walls.

The ruins are forbidden; not because they're interesting, but because they're impossible to maintain, and more than one mageling has been crushed beneath collapsing walls. But she doesn't believe any of the myths or spook-tales surrounding the place, especially not those about the Underlings, a forgotten breed of people rumored to be monsters.

Until she meets one, anyway.

Oh man- this must be a big canvas to get that level of detail in. How big is the original? This is beautiful!

6000x3500 pixels. I considered using it as a cover or promotional art for if I decide to self-publish the novel, so I wanted it to be fairly high-res. In retrospect, I actually probably should have made it a bit bigger.

What did you intend on doing with it? It could blow up pretty large and keep enough detail if it's for promotion only. Detail is only important if you're selling the poster, or if people will be standing in front of it critiquing it. You could easily double the size and it'd be only a little blurry in print. And it doesn't have edges- you'd barely notice it Smile

Well, probably the book's cover, as I said, though I know it's plenty big enough for that. Even for the print version. It's fine for banners and site graphics, too, but I had considered using it as a table banner for shows/conventions and it might be a bit small for that. I ended up designing a logo for my "brand" after I did that piece, though, so now there's not really any need. ^^

Oh wow. All of those walls! This is amazing.
The story behind it is interesting as well. Knowing a little backstory certainly helps give the image more personality.

      Thanks!
I've always loved mazes and foggy jungle-y environments, so I was compelled to put them together.

Fun premise, and very atmospheric lighting.

like the fog- very atmospheric and foreboding .

Wow this is really cool. It must have taken forever to draw all those walls of the maze.

Thanks! It took a few hours, yeah ^^;; It was originally a bit more detailed, but I had an ill-timed power outage right as I was saving the file and it corrupted, costing me quite a bit of progress. I was able to salvage this much and try to finish, though, so small blessings~
