It was a blue-pencil drawing which I scanned and manipulated in Photoshop CS3 (re-lining, texture cloning, proportions, etc...) ^___^ the background was entirely added digitally (but I tried to make it look as if it had been there originally) and for the translucent colors I just used the layer blending modes of "overlay" and "multiply" so the pencil shading I did initially would still be visible.
