Chapter 1: Kelli's Three Gifts

Kelli knew it was coming.  She was practically in tears by the time she was out of the car.  She twiddled her thumb in the waiting room as she always did when she was nervous.  She heard the secretary call the name Kelli Braun.  As she walks into Dr. Phibbs’ room at Lucky Smile’s Orthodontist Center , she knew that this one hour appointment would change her life, or so it seemed.

Kelli was a great, popular person in her Middle School.  She had three gifts that everyone seemed to know.  The first one was beauty, her most visible gift.  Kelli was slim and tall, and had violet eyes.  No one else in the world had her violet eyes, wide, and like an African violet in full bloom.  She wore very subtle, and sometimes none at all, letting her rosy cheeks and long eyelashes act as a natural product.  The most amazing thing yet, was her hair.  It was long, of course, but smooth and silky, like the top of a good ear of corn.  Sometimes it was braided, or tied back with chopsticks.  But the days when she left it long made everyone turn their head when she passed by.  Some girls called her Aphrodite, but she wasn’t a goddess, she was just Kelli.

Her second gift was the gift of memorization.  In 7th grade, nobody had studied for the Preamble test, but she had it memorized, even the punctuation!  Perhaps this gift gave her good grades.  She was an excellent student.  She even memorized the entire Code of Conduct.  Memorization was, in fact, part of her third gift.

Her last gift was acting.  She could convince anyone that she was a preppy cheerleader, or a depressed goth.  She could be a nerd, or even a rebel gone wild.  She could get out of any assignment if she wanted to.  She had made up excuses on the spot.  The drama club worshipped her, but she had no intention of joining.
