Chapter 1: Chapter 1

I awoke from another one of my recurring nightmares, dripping with sweat. Shakily I got out of bed and scrambled for something to cover my bare feet with as they touched the cold tile floor. I lifted the glass of lukewarm water to my lips and sipped the chlorine flavored liquid. Sleepily, I shuffled into the hallway. The lights of the spotless white hall blinded me and I got a nauseatingly strong wife of coffee and cleaning fluids up my nose.

'I’m gonna have to get used to that', I thought.

I moved silently through the hall as I followed the noise of electricity humming in the other room. My eyes adjusted to the darkness as I entered the common area and I watched the night life of the room mutter and mumble and some rocked back and forth. I approached a man I knew only as “Prancer” (he believed he was a horse), and sat down across from him. He sat snorting and staring at a TV screen that only showed static. I tried to make conversation, but none of them would speak to me. A nurse watched from a light office window, looking at me with pity in her eyes. I looked away from her and the next thing I knew, she was at my side.

“You should go back to bed, dear,” she said to me in a voice you’d speak to a baby with.

I shook my head and said “No, I’m fine. There’s no point in going back to sleep.”

The nurse frowned. “Now dear,” she said, “I’m afraid the doctor has given me orders to ensure you’re in bed. Come now, I’ll get you some sedatives that’ll put you right back to sleep.”

Begrudgingly, I went with her back to my room. She handed me a cup with pills and another with water and I took my medicine. I climbed back into bed and she shut the door.
As I drifted into unconsciousness, I thought 'I don’t belong here, I need to get out. I need to prove I’m not like the rest of these crazies'.
And I really believed that, but the voices in the walls had too many plans for me.
