Sima, while raised in a noble and esteemed elven house, was born to an unknown mother. As a living symbol of his father’s infidelity to his station and people, much of his young life was spent not knowing his place, being regarded as a ‘complication’, and ricocheting between the frills and formality of his father’s world, and the exhausting, undignified life of the palace servants.

The moment he was old enough his father sent him to be trained as a scholar. Far away from the palace, but close enough that he could be watched carefully. Sima had no passion for books but at least here he knew which room he was expected to sleep in. Unlike many of his fellow scholars, Sima had no skill for magic, and instead turned to the more taboo subject of alchemy.

He carries himself carefully, always polite and reliable as is expected of his father’s son, but rumours of his birth and his mother follow him. Regardless of his efforts it casts a shadow over how his peers see him. Unable to defend himself from others expectations, and out of reach of his father’s immediate condemnation, he doesn't try to fight his ‘unacceptable’ behaviour. Along with studying alchemy, he is rather stand-offish, self-reliant and often unhelpful in turn. If others are involved, he would rather not be there. At least, where his fellow students and tutors are concerned; the serving staff and townsfolk speak almost favorably of him.
