Embla grew up in a hill village named Woodrest, the oldest daughter in the only gnome family in the area. Hill gnomes are skilled makers, and feel a connection to the earth and all its riches deep in their sinews. Embla learned to work with fibers, wood, and metal from a young age, learning from her parents and teaching her younger siblings. Folk came from all over the hills and sometimes from the plains as well to commission work from the Cleverhanded artificers.

Early one autumn, after a parching hot summer, two mages fought a battle. They were so far away, none in the village could see or even hear the battle, but the foolish mages flung fire at one another, and set the woods ablaze. Flames roared through the tinder-dry woods, until nothing was left but black ash and the cracked bones of charred treetrunks.

Embla's family hid deep in the iron mine behind their home, emerging only days later when the fire had passed and the raging heat had died down. But the village was gone, along with their neighbors, their crops, and their animals. That place was home no longer, and could not support their large family. They scattered, travelling the lands and searching for work. One day, Embla hopes to find a place where her family can gather once more, and riches enough to see them comfortable. Until that day, she travels, explores, and seeks her fortune.
