A short description of left the wolf would be as follows, he was once a human but now has lost the ability to ever change back into that form he is a grey wolf with white fur markings on his cheeks and forehead and cute green eyes!

Try using a reference, like looking at a picture of real wolves when you draw.

  A problem with looking at real wolfs is that every time I try to draw realism it looks terrible but if I make it more cartoony it starts looking more passable to me at least.

  Yeah, I get where your coming from. I always likes the saying "You have to know the rules to break them."
  If you're dead set on not drawing from real life, try referencing some of your favorite cartoons. Learning face proportions might also help.
