Thorn's talisman is a sketchbook that they use to document their adventures, as well as important information. The gem-like aparatus is a pen that houses ink for them to draw with. The book itself was crafted by Thorn's parents as a way for them to express themself when they were a child. Somehow, the pages are not yet filled...
