Hi, thank you! I used mostly watercolor pencils. They're a very useful material for achieving painterly effects with all the fine control you get more easily from colored pencils or graphite than classic paint. I also went over the piece and added highlights and effects (like the stars) using white acrylic paint with a very, VERY small brush.
Paper might matter here, too, in which case I used Arches hot press watercolor paper. Arches is admittedly pretty high-quality, and therefore expensive. Since you'd just be getting back into it and may not have the budget for high-grade materials, I'd say a cheaper paper, like Canson brand watercolor pads or mixed media sketchbooks, would work out very well too.
