The big thing is to keep the luminosity correct. There's a lot of wiggle room for hue and saturation, but not luminosity. IF you turn the image grey scale and see if it reads then that is a big help

ooo, I tend to do that with character designs, but I never thought to do that with an art piece, thanks for the tip!
