I often spin the color wheel around and use analogous colors for the eyes!
And also check the 3 values (light, medium, dark) before adjusting the whole art color again at the end.

I haven't gotten into color theory yet, it's pretty intimidating. But I'm looking forward to being able to make nice looking art like yours once I do learn <3
