Hungers, Gluttons, & Other Such Beasties

When a new species arises a new predator will too. Even amongst invasive species like Lionfish eventually the sharks will figure out they can eat them. Slimes in the Noremas grew a taste for Nomlings, so many calories, fats, and delicious carbs all run about snack sized. These slimes grew into their own species called Hungers, a twisted version of slimes that have grown an exclusive taste for Noms. This taste makes them ravenous and more so after that sugar high, driving them into a frenzy to eat more. As a hunger grows and feasts on Nomlings they evolve into a new form of Hunger, a Glutton. The gluttons look nothing like their original slime selves and instead look like a new species of monster.

Turns out these slimes weren’t just growing a taste for sugar, but for the souls that were bound to and enhanced by the Nomlings. These ingredients ferment and take over the slime transforming them into Gluttons. Gluttons are incredibly dangerous, they’re smarter, faster, stronger, and more efficient at hunting and eating Nomlings. This new threat expedited the healing between Nomcromancers and Nomlings. Nomcromancers taught Noms how to become Nomcromancers and worked together to track and hunt Hungers before they can turn into Gluttons and occasionally defeating Gluttons before they can hurt even more Noms.

Upon defeating Hungers and Gluttons the Nomcromancers discovered that they would drop ingredients that they could use to make the Nomlings stronger. They created Nomaline from Hungers, a stone that is the crystallization of Nomling components and souls. Upon consumption Nomling transform into new form called Nomgrels. From Gluttons they made Nomethyst resulting in the Nomster form, a rare form made specifically for taking down Gluttons.

Sour Patch Ticks

A scavenger species but a very dangerous Opportunistic Carnivore. If allowed to grow into a pack or horde they’ll develop pack tactics and eventually a hive mind making them extremely dangerous hunters. Individually they’re the weakest Glutton. A common Sour Patch tactic is to swarm a Nom and lick them paralyzing the Nom by causing sugars to bind. They don’t seem particularly interested in Sugar and will avoid it, their taste appears to be more about preferring living food.

Some Gluttons are scared of other gluttons and Sour Patch Ticks are scared of Ghoulash. The larger the Ghoulash the more a horde will avoid the area. So at least you don’t have to worry about dealing with two Gluttons at once. These ones tend to be on the more cowardly side, only attacking if they outnumber their food. It’s recommended to have a larger Nom come with you when venturing through Tick infested areas. Remember the saying “If you see a tick, raise your arms quick. But don’t turn your back or you’ll be their snack.” The larger you appear the more scary you appear to Ticks.

Ghoulash

An obligate carnivore the Ghoulash is a solitary hunter who will seek out Nom living or otherwise and consume them turning their bodies into an endless stew. Ghoulash have been known to attack other Gluttons and will often win, their savory smell can be smelled from a distance and tips off other Gluttons to leave their territory. This smell gets stronger with size and should a Ghoulash become old enough they’ll be too large to hunt efficiently and will instead bury themselves becoming an ambush predator. Luring in prey with free food just to CHOMP. Since they’re incredibly simple it’s relatively easy to tame them, just have a big supply of meats and filling vegetables like potatoes. The stew they make has been known to bring eaters to tears.

Wild Ghoulash start their young lives roaming the woods looking for any foods they can add to their digestive pot. Sweet, Savory, Sour, it doesn’t matter as long as it makes the Ghoulash smell more appetizing. When they’re done for the day they’ll rest on a pile of sticks and increase their body temperature. At the right place and time they can easily pose as a stew pot. But once it reaches adulthood and occasional meals aren’t enough it will bury itself and consume anything that gets close enough. The best way to avoid a Ghoulash is to adventure on a full stomach, and know that normal cauldrons don’t typically get as big as a house. Awareness isn’t guaranteed as if any creature gets hungry enough they’ll go looking for it and a rampaging cauldron full of scalding liquid sounds like the fast track to getting dissolved.

Spatsinthe

A beautiful yet terrifying Glutton, they tend to be rare which is a blessing considering their horrifying tactics. A Spatsinthe will wait for other Gluttons to attack and while you’re distracted they’ll swoop down, bite into the Nom and suck the flavors out of it leaving only bitter behind. The Spatsinthe then passes the flavors through it’s digestive system where sweet is turned into a venom and the rest repairs the body. The Spatsinthe needs to eat a lot in order to retain it’s ability to fly. The venom is incredibly dangerous to all creatures causing lethargy is small doses and necrosis in large doses. But it’s greatest tool is also yours. Spatsinthe aren’t immune to their own venom, so Nomcromancers will capture small Spatsinthe to harvest their venom.

Spatsinthe colors tend to stay on the lighter side since most of the food they consume is immediately used on healing. This leaves many with a ghostly pale, transparent, or pastel appearance. The best way to protect yourself from Spatsinthe is by spraying yourself with a bitterant.

Twisted Twins

Twins that aren’t twisted don’t stay that way for long. Art by SeagullSaga

A double headed dunce, people like to say “Two heads are better than one”. That’s not the case with this Glutton. Originally born as a single long tube they chase after anything that moves. Each end has it’s own brain and free will but this works against it because eventually one of the Twins will run after a different prey than the other causing them to get Twisted or tied into knots. They’d be cute if they weren’t so ravenous. Their most common tactic is to twist around an opponent and spew molten hot spicy cheese onto their meal. As Twins age they become too twisted to hunt efficiently so they opt to projectile vomit their caustic cheese. Creating zones that can’t be passed through or the creature may dissolve.

It’s really a shame they’re so mean, they’d make good pets. Art by Wormsyrup

The only thing scarier than a Twisted Twin is a Twin Rod because a Rod is intelligent enough to not get twisted. If one manages to stay untwisted or is capable of untying itself they’ll use that to their advantage. They may opt to constrict or bind their foe while the other spews cheese or bites at them. A weird thing about intelligent ones is that they’re clearly capable of understanding you. Often responding to your call outs for tactics. Can they speak and choose not to or do they read your body language and predict your moves? The best way to avoid them is carry a spray bottle, spritz it at them and they panic and run.

The worst case scenario is if several Twisted Twins intertwine with others creating a Twisted King or a Twisted Hydra. The tactic for deal with this big ball of pretzel spaghetti is to work together and attack the similarly colored heads. If they’re the same color or pattern they’re attached, and with each defeated it adds dead weight to the body slowing them down.

Sweet Tusk

Also known as Cherry Chumps, Sweet Tusks are large brutes made of a variety of Nom sourced sweets. They walk around like a gorilla looking like a brute as they smash everything with their massive forearms. Many think Sweet Tusk are stupid but they’re very intelligent working with other species of Glutton. It’s very common to see them lobbing Ticks, holding Noms for Twins and Spatsinthe, and even luring Noms toward Ghoulash by pretending to be injured and scared.

The idea that they’re unintelligent comes from their clumsy behavior because the cherry on top is a separate symbiotic entity that has fuzzy vision being very near sighted. They then have to convey this info to the blind brute below it. It’s lower body is protected by a plastic wrapper made of bioplastics and hardened sugar so the best way to dispose of it is to attack the eye.

Reapirth

Imagine if they started working with Gluttons… Art by Wormsyrup

Hungers and Gluttons aren’t the only creatures on Noremas that consume living creatures. When the Mera, the second species to inhabit Noremas, arrived they brought with them their natural predator. Another creature originating from slime. As the slimes consumed Meras and Spirits that lived in their home, the world between “The Veil”, they too adapted becoming Harvesters. Growing in number and strength becoming better hunters of Spirits. Once the Mera worked with the Spirits they shared energy with their spirit friends, effectively refining and purifying their soul energy. This purer energy accelerated slime growth giving rise to Reapirth, the mother of all harvesters.

Reapirth are more fearful than their gluttonous cousins. Rather than specializing in any one method of capture and consumption they became an efficient, intelligent, and ruthless beast. The Mera fear what might happen if Reapirth encounter Gluttons. Gluttons might fight with the Reapirth, or worse work with them or potentially even breed with them to create an even more terrifying beast. For now Mera and Nom work together to hunt down Reapirth before they can mature and ideally before a Harvester can even get a taste of a Mera.
