Chapter 80: Counter Song?

The bump on his noggin rendered Bodhi mostly immune to the effects of the siren’s song, but unfortunately, that didn’t apply to everyone else. The mermaid’s verse was still luring ships in. What was that thing they’d taught him about sirens at the Cove? Something about how to counter the effects of their songs without fighting them. The sea otter’s head hurt more than usual when he tried to think.

Swimming to a small island, Bodhi walked onto the beach to think for a moment. Laying on the warm sands triggered a memory from his druid training. A siren’s song played backward cancels out the effect of the original. Now, he just needed additional song support. Crawling to his feet, the lifeguard looked around the island and spotted a blonde man with a visor.

β€œHey bro, can you sing,” Bodhi shouted to the person.

β€œWho me,” the human in the visor asked as he spun around to face the otter. β€œWho are you and why are you asking? Do you plan to harness the siren’s power? Can I see the data on that?”

β€œMy bros call me Bodhi bro,” the sea otter answered with a wink.  β€œIf we sing the siren’s song backward then we can counter the effect.”

β€œI am Telerand not bro,” the humanoid snapped before musing on the proposed attack plan. β€œIt is an interesting theory but it’ll take time to translate and reverse the lyrics. Also we’ll need more than just you and me to overpower her voice.”

β€œGood idea, T-Rand bro. You do all the words things and I’ll find more voices,” Bodhi winked with some finger guns before running off.

β€œMy names not… forget it,” Telerand growled as the sea otter disappeared into the bush.

Bodhi had a new supplement to his mission. He needed to find people with strong voices to overwhelm the siren song with a countersong. Crashing through the trees and bushes on the small island, the lifeguard failed to see anyone.  Bodhi emerged on the opposite side of the tiny landmass to see a dragon ship. Whoever was on the boat shouted war cries towards the mermaid with a set of mighty lungs.

β€œHey bro! Over here,” Bodhi called out, waving his arms, hoping to catch their attention. Luckily, they were paying attention, and soon, the dragon ship approached the shore.

β€œHail otter person,” the white-haired woman commanding the ship shouted. β€œWhat is it you seek of Kara the mighty.”

β€œRighteous ride, Kara bro. I’m Bodhi, and I have need of your particular set of skills,” the blue-striped otter explained as he looked over the boat. It was like none he’d seen before, and he wanted to see how well it caught waves.

β€œYou need a monster fought,” Kara asked, looking over the waters towards Laguna. β€œI’ve already got one in mind, but maybe afterward.”

β€œActually bro we’ve got the same opponent in mind and I need you to use those mighty lungs you got to help with the countersong,” the lifeguard told the Viking woman. β€œI’ve got T-Rand bro on the other side of the island working on reversing the lyrics.”

β€œI shall meet this T-Rand and shout the countersong to the heavens,” Kara pledges as she angles the boat around the island to meet with Telerand.

He had two people, but maybe one more would be best. Bodhi didn’t want to risk falling under the siren’s song again by swimming out to find anyone. A loud splash alerted the sea otter to someone further down the beach. Upon investigation, Bodhi found an orange mousefolk with green hair throwing large rocks into the water.

β€œYou’re going to have to throw harder if you are trying to hit the siren, mouse bro,” Bodhi laughed as another rock splashed.

β€œJacko is filling the ocean with rocks to make the path across the water so I can walk out and steal all the mermaid treasures,” the mousefolk informed the sea otter. β€œThis is my most evil plan yet.”

β€œSounds like a solid plan, bro, but can you sing,” Bodhi nods, unable to see the holes in the evil scheme.

β€œEvil singing is one of Jacko’s specialties,” the short green and orange man laughed. β€œAuto-tuning makes me sound like an angel.

β€œGood. Follow me,” the lifeguard smiles, motioning for Jacko to follow him.

With his quartet assembled, Bodhi gathered them all on Kara’s boat. Telerand was annoyed that everyone was calling him T-Rand, but he reversed the lyrics and melody. Jacko climbed the sail to hit the highest, evilest notes. They say the heavens opened and wept for the song that erupted from that boat. Not because it was beautiful but because it was terrible. Bodhi could play the ukulele but couldn’t sing to save his life. T-Rand was off rhythm and couldn’t hit a note to save his life. Kara belted out the loudest hitting notes, but they were just not the right ones in the correct order. Jacko’s plan to be physically the highest didn’t help him hit the high notes, but he insisted it would sound great in post. Luckily, a counter song didn’t need to sound good. All it had to do was drown out the original.

β€œLooks like we saved the day,” Bodhi smiled as the allure of the siren’s song ended. Its effects were pulling in no more boats or bystanders.
