When salmon swim and eagles soar The orcas come to feast for fish galore The runs are fat and strong and sweet As the orcas eat and eat and eat
Great splashes ring And grandmothers sing Of times of old to tell the things that need to be told Like how to read the whispers bestowed On them from the deep current’s flow
From trenches deep below To eagles far above The grandmothers remind, with love, How to hunt and sing and play And how to put on a strong display To remind the ones above That those among us are not unloved
They feel and hurt and sing like us Their pain leaves little to be discussed Their fate rests upon the actions taken And those who think that we are mistaken Might just awaken to see The world is just left with you and me
But with all they have undergone They still manage to look on And pass the knowledge that they have learned To those who need it, they will not be left unlearned
The salmon swim The eagles soar As we are left once more The chill in the air grows strong As the whales continue to sing their song.
