siinä paha missä paha mainitaan;

(speaking of the devil;)

On the edge of an unknown universe, a child was born from only stardust and silence.

In that empty void, the child grew. It screamed into the quiet as it matured, until its voice split, and became an army. Its spine grew twisted and sore from grief - its legs stretched themselves too thin from rancor. Its eyes became hollow like a starless night. It grew horns as dark and as sharp as a forest after a fire. The child hurt, in and out. Everything in its being ached an endless twinge, until there was nothing left of its skin but bruises.

Solitude became its greatest enemy. Both its mind and body crooked from being forsaken so, it found a world to nest in.

In its subliminal quest for vengeance, the child - now grown - left only coal and soot in its wake. It hungered for nothing less than perfection, no matter if it were its surroundings, its companions, or its own hide. The child grieved the imperfections of its own flesh. It drove out the area's fauna, and made an instrument out of their skeletons. The few creatures it considered close, it treated like worthless cattle. With all the misery it sowed, its presence became an ill omen.

Trying so hard to never be alone again, the child sowed shut the path that could've led it to its desired destination.

When it awoke next, it didn't recognize the place it was in - and it wasn't the only thing that was wrong.

Sickeningly contrasting, cosmic scarring ran down the length of its body. Its once near-perfect hide now tarnished, the child was forced to accept imperfection.

In that moment, the child believed it had died. Could it ever arise anew? It didn't know - it wasn't sure if it even wanted to, if given the option. It pressed its macabre kantele fast at its chest.

And in its hands, the instrument - pale as Death - gained acquaintances. Strange, small lights danced around it, beckoning the child to do what it knew best.

It played a single note, and in front of the child, a rift of light and dark tore itself into the fabric of existence.

It was a second chance.
