A Song for Winter: Preferred Weapon - Sword

Chapter 13: Preferred Weapon - Sword

From an early age, William was trained to be the master of several martial weapons. Mastering everything from the sword and ax to the spear and shield became a deadly expert in the art of combat. Fighting alongside his fellow clan mates only made William stronger and deadlier as the years went by. Using many weapons throughout his training William settled on the sword as his go-to weapon of choice with a hand ax and his witch knife as his secondary weapons. Swords were a versatile, balanced, and easy-to-use weapon that could be used in most situations to kill or disable most foes.

In Clan Drackonas once the warking has determined a child has shown true maturity either through trial or contribution to the clan then they are recognized as an adult. Each new adult in the clan is presented with a new sword and hand ax. William was no different in receiving this gift of arms after surviving his trials in the wilderness. Like most these weapons didn’t stay in working order for long as members of Clan Drackonas were prone to breaking weapons either in combat or while training. Unlike most though, William took the broken pieces from his initiation sword and ax and used them to forge a brand new sword on his forge. This new sword, being made from the combined metal of two different weapons, was of course heavier but that didn’t slow William down by any measure. The double-edged blade was sharp enough to cut through bone while being strong enough to maintain its edge and shape.

With his new sword in hand, William led warbands into combat many times in defense of his home. When the twin jötunn tried to raid the farms of Clan Wintersong, the allied clan of Clan Drackonas, William used his sword to cut the Achilles tendons of one of the jötunns toppling to the ground with thunderous thud. Upon seeing William leap upon his twin and tear his throat open with his sword the other jötunn tried to flee. He didn’t make it far before William used his sword to claim the jötunn’s head. Sword held high William was welcomed as a hero upon return to his clan dragging the heads of the slain jötunn behind him.

It wasn’t long before monsters feared the sight of William and his sword. Draugr once tried to invade from the west but upon seeing William and his now-legendary sword turned to flee. Like everything else that tried to flee from William’s wrath, they were effortlessly sliced to pieces. Angry lindwurms descending from the sky soon fought their scales decorating armor, horns used for drinking, and skin used for clothes. Arrows and spears may have brought the serpent dragons to the ground but it was William’s sword that cleaved their heads from their necks. None stood a chance against William when he took to the field of battle with his sword in hand. At least not till that one terrible night when William lost everyone he loved.
