Chapter 1: Many Hands Makes Light Work

With no plans for the day and no random crises that needed to be handled, it was the perfect time to clean up around the house. Chores, those random little things that everyone pushes aside for later, were either mind-numbing or tiring for most people. For Avalon, they were more of a collection of minor inconveniences. He grabbed himself his morning breakfast, eggs and bacon with milk, and slowly scanned his home with a few floating eyes.

There was a pile of plates and bowls that needed to be washed from the past few days, which were starting to smell. The trash needed to be taken out as it was also starting to smell. His laundry needed to be done, the wiring of his TV needed fixing, and he had to organize paperwork from some recent jobs as well. Oh, and he needed groceries and adventuring supplies.

The first order of business was the dishes, which were simple to handle. A few conjured hands and eyes would make quick work of that. It was always a last-minute thought to close the blinds so the neighbors wouldn’t be creeped out by the bloodshot, unblinking, floating eyeballs. He did the same thing for the TV’s wiring and the paperwork and instead went to personally handle the other daily duties. The bins were stuffed, and a small swarm of eldritch insects were summoned to consume the waste. Of course, he couldn’t just leave the little monsters to roam free, so he placed a massive lock on the metal bins before leaving to get his groceries and supplies.

Contact with other people was kept to a minimum. Avalon preferred to observe and enjoyed watching children play and people go about their business. His eyes would always linger on the happy couples he’d pass, enjoying the memories they brought as he took in the ambient noises of the people. It reminded him of the markets back home and the park near the castle.

His groceries were rather simple most of the time: a variety of meats, fruits, and veggies, and a few seasonings he was running low on. He did nab a few confections as well, though he tried to eat them sparingly out of habit. Every time he went for groceries he would look for a very specific set of ingredients as well, hoping to recreate the meals his mother used to make despite the memories of them being nothing but distant echoes. Those thoughts would occupy his mind until he reached the shops for his supplies. The more pragmatic and cost-effective gear was always his preferred choice. Litches, elementals, and ancient demons didn’t judge you for not having the latest trendy design on your ball bearings or nets.

Once home, the other chores would be done. His hands and eyes were efficient by design, and that left him with more than enough time to relax or to plan out his next excursion.
