Chapter 1: Tasks on the Bossanova

The day started in the same slow drag that most days started with aboard the Bossanova. Carvorus' jaw was aching again. It was passed the point where he cared to tend to it, instead, he focused on his tasks. He needed to get ready for the day in time to realign the nav core in time to move on to the running diagnostics that would take the remainder of the day until his dinner break.

He pulled himself up and out of his covers. The bare metal of the ship's flooring under his paws was chilling. Carvorus dressed in his uniform and readjusted the fluid in his jaw supports, hoping for even the slightest bit of comfort from the change in pressure. When the aching didn't quite, Carvorus moved on.

The Bossanova was one of the bigger ships in the Star Federations' fleet, full of winding hallways and complex operating systems that would make any cat go mad trying to decipher. Carvorus stuck to his own specialization, fixing and monitoring the thing he was put in charge of. If it was outside of his jurisdiction, he didn't bother with it. He was an engineer and a good one. He had no issue with the limited socialization and the complex, repetitive tasks.

He started his walk down to the nav core. Bosco intercepted him in the hallway on his own journey to the bridge. Bosco started serving for the Star Federation with the Meridian. The Meridian was a much smaller ship by Federation standards.

Bosco said nothing to him and instead continued on his way to the bridge. Carvorus scowled in his direction.

He noticed a long time ago that their relationship was falling before it actually did. It was just painful how it ended. Explosive and damaging. It wasn't long after Carvorus' injury that the flames burning away their bond started to burn brighter. He knew it was coming. He could smell the smoke.

The nav core was deserted. It was a dark room, aside from the glowing panels that lined to walls. The panels reflected the tubes carrying the channels from the nav core. The main portation of the core was a glowing central beam with a faint green hue. It was mostly made of steel with gaps covered in thick tempered glass.

Carvorus knelt at the panel on the right of the central core. He pulled a pryer from his unform's bag and wedged it between the panel and the core. The metal sheet fell to the ground with a clang, exposing the wiring to the central core.

He adjusted the fuse and fixed the rubber coating on some of the wires to keep them from fraying. A simple job. Carvorus welded the panel back into place and went on his way to the next job.

Night hit faster with the busy schedule. He was back in best before he knew it. The diagnostics across the right hall were finished and his data was turned in to one of his commanders.
Sleep was nothing but a small break between the work. The next day he was going to do it all again. Check on the nav core, and run diagnostics. Avoid Bosco.
