Chapter 2: Godspawn incantation

It had been one hell of a ride, but now it was almost over.

They had escaped the well, managed their way through an unsettling forest, fought the Lesser Godspawn for the second time, and retrieved a sample of its blood to use in the formation of a sigil.

Chee looked back at her handy work under the light of the moon. She had used drops of Godspawn blood to bolster the paint from her tail feathers, believing that it was needed to make the ritual work. That’s what she remembered, anyway.

“Does it look okay?” she asked the floating orb nearby. It was about 3 ft in size, spherical with a flanged base, what looked to be a blueish green in colour,, and had silvery metallic arms that dangled from its underside.

It whirred and buzzed before producing a holographic screen in front of its sensors. The screen flashed a few images and colours before going blank, then words began to appear on the screen.

Chee glanced at the screen, tilting her head to the side as she tried to decipher the words. Unfortunately for the doppler, it was all nothing but an unreadable mess in her eyes; she couldn’t read anything that wasn’t in the fey language.

Regardless, Chee took that as a sign that her sigil looked accurate, and if it didn’t, then Quillen’s and Dartha’s would do the trick.

She looked over at the pair that had just finished carving theirs into a nearby tree. It was just about ready.

Chee gave the two a thumbs up, then turned her attention back to the floating mechanical thing.

“Alright, let’s go.” she motioned for it to follow.

K80 made another whirring sound again, dropping slightly in place. More words popped up on the screen but it meant nothing to Chee. Although, Chee thought that maybe its sounds sounded… scared? Hesitant?

She tried to pull it along by the arm, but the little construct whizzed out of the way, making even more sounds at her. Irritation?

“Okay, okay, you stay here with the others; I’ll lure that creature this way.” And before any protesting could be had, Chee started back to where they left the armless girl monstrosity, and luckily they hadn’t travelled too far from it. In fact, the house was still in view.

The Godspawn child stared at the direction of the 4 creatures that had injured her. Her body had been speared by one overgrown lizard, she’d been smacked around by a strange creature with horns in black armour and a tattered cape, and most of all, her arms had been RIPPED OFF by ANOTHER giant lizard creature- a purple on at that!

The Godspawn seethed in anger, plotting her revenge while her battered body recovered. Oh the things she was going to do to them- and how DARE they reject-...

Chee watched as the Godspawn child perked and stood up on the house steps. She looked angry, but her face also displayed a hint of sick joy to it.

“Back for round two!?” the creature snarled, blood spilling from her mouth and staining her shirt a brackish red. “Or have you reconsidered my offer?” an unsettling grin spread across her face, revealing those jagged teeth. She began to step toward the tall lizard thing but was suddenly stopped in her tracks. “What was that…?”

Chee continued, this time louder for the Godspawn to hear:

“Mind’s undoing and wordless lies

Silence shattered by the broken’s cries

Promised torment. lamented be,

The destruction of sanity promised to me

We reject your purpose, the gift of despair

Be cast away to the star’s dead glare

For here you find only those who turn you away

The passing of night for the light of day”

Silence pervaded the area, the two staring at each other with intensity. Did it work? They both waited for something to happen, for the ground or the stars to split open, or for a portal to appear and suck someone into it.

The girl-creature grinned, laughing at the failed attempt of an incantation. “Was that it?!” she shrieked in amusement, nearly on the verge of tears. “Oh brother~!” she called out, “Did you hear that?! We’re unwanted!!” More laughter erupted from the child, and the house began to shake and tremble.

An earthquake?!

No… The doors of the house burst open in a flurry of flesh and splinters. Chee shielded her face from the shards, but that couldn’t stop the writhing tendrils that shot out toward her.

“WHAT IS THAT?!” she cried out.

“MY DEAR BROTHER!” the spawn-child answered, eyes wide with excitement.

The large column of snapping tendrils and limbs moved fast, and it was targeting the fey lizard that trespassed on its property.

Chee turned tail and ran as fast as her legs could carry her back towards the others. She had to warn them of this new monster, but she had a feeling she didn’t have to with how quick this thing was.

Another arm shot out at her, smashing through trees with ease. She yelped as she was narrowly crushed by one.

“Quillen! Dartha! Blue thing!” she shouted. “RUN!!”

Quillen was the first one to look over, already hearing the commotion before it got near. His ears stood tall and his quills rose defensively. He didn’t need to be told more than once to run.

“L-let’s go.” she squeaked, pulling Dartha up by the cloak and setting her on his back before taking off, leaving K80 behind.

“Hey Quill, what about those guys?” asked Dartha, somewhat concerned that they were going off without their new friends.

“They’ll be fine- but right now we gotta look out for ourselves!” Quillen said in response. The doppler wasn’t heartless or didn’t care, he just had a great sense of self-preservation.

K80 watched in terror as he was left behind by the armoured mousekin and the quilled lizard. He brought his clamps to his sphere and circled in place, worried that he was going to suffer a terrible fate, until Chee ran by. She wasn’t able to grab him, but she lifted her tail for him to grab onto; and luckily he did.

The creature behind them roared, causing the realm around them to shiver and quake. Ahead of her, it looked like the air itself was made of water, distorting everything around them and splitting. She saw the two ahead of her moving at such impossible speeds until they just flashed out of existence- then everything looked normal again.

‘This doesn’t look good.’
