Nightmares Closing In: Prompt 6

Apirka helps Brier face down some nightmares between this piece and this one

Brier’s feet hit the ground as Apirka released her.  

 

“Thank you.” she whispered, though she could not be sure that her friend heard her over the distant clash of weapons and the keening of the wind above them.  She shivered as the darkness seemed to close in around her the moment her friend’s hands left her.  How could it be darker here than it had been down in that well?

Brier started back towards the sound of battle, but even as she moved she could feel ghostly fingers brush her sleeves.   Despite the chill in the wind she felt a sudden hot breath on her neck. 

“It’s pointless.” the voice whispered to her. “Why resist us? Struggling against us will just invite us to draw. you. in.”    

 

Brier’s breath caught as she felt icy tendrils seem to reach around her.  Inside her.  She closed her eyes.  

 

Then she felt them.  Warm hands on her face.  She opened her eyes to see Apirka’s on her own.

“Brier. Are you….Can you hear me?” 

Brier nodded. “I hear you.” 

A half smile “Are you ready? To go back.  We need everyone we can get.” 

Brier put a hand on Apirka’s arm.  The other she rested on the hilt of her sword.  “I’m ready.  I’ve got your back.”
