Chapter 2: Part 2

A birthday ficlet that I wrote for one of my favourite Prince of Tennis characters, Amane Hikaru! (Even though that was in November...) I seriously should have posted this part a long time ago, but at least I got it done now. This is the second part and the third one is again for Kaidou's birthday... I'm terribly slow, sorry about that.

I do not own Prince of Tennis or the characters mentioned in this fic. They all belong to Konomi-sensei.

What a surprise it had been to him when he had met the redhead again. In a way it had felt as though time had stopped altogether. Visibly the only thing that had changed about him was his size. As a kid he had been as tiny as everyone else, but as a teenager he was very tall and apparently muscular because of the special training he must have been going through over the years. He had also begun to play tennis with a long wooden racket, but it had seemed to suit him even better than a normal one.

Kaidou hadn’t wanted to show anyone else that from their opposing team he already knew the member who stood out in more ways than one. However, it had been relieving to see that Amane had grown up and become such an awesome tennis player, just like they had decided when they had started to play tennis together. Nothing less than becoming a regular member in a powerful tennis team would have been enough for either one of them. That dream had come true, and on top of that, Kaidou had had the chance to show that with his skills he was able to win a captain even with a handicap.

After the match, from the corner of his eye, he had seen the worry that had shown on the redhead’s face, but he had decided to ignore it. At the moment they were competitors and the past was nothing more than the past, even though seeing the smile on Amane’s face every now and then had still brought a plenty of nice memories on his mind. There had always been something magical about it that Kaidou had never quite understood.

Although that match had happened so many years ago, he could still remember the day very vividly. There just wasn’t a way that he could have forgotten how Amane had found him from the grounds before they were going to return to their schools. It had happened only a little while after Kaidou had gotten treatment for the wound on his forehead. To cool himself down after everything that had happened that day, he had bought himself a cold drink from a vending machine and sat on a bench nearby. Not much later, the redhead had already sat down next to him. The silence between them had spoken a lot more than any words could have. When they had finally turned to look at each other properly for the first time in many years, there had only been an exchanged smile that had eventually become a brief kiss on the lips.

Compared to the memories from the childhood, it had felt different. If two kids kissed each other, it might have not been such a big deal, really. But in case of two teenager boys it was...almost forbidden? At least it had been much more exciting, in addition very thrilling because anyone could have seen what they had just done.

“I’m glad that you’re alright. I don’t think that I could even begin to tell you how much I’ve missed you. Or how much I’ve missed kissing you,” he had said so frankly that his words had nearly pierced Kaidou’s heart.

The words he might have wanted to say never came out. It had been so sudden. There had been no time to prepare himself for all those feelings that had started to flow inside him because of the redhead. How could such a little thing, as seeing him there and then, have made him lose his composure? But no matter what, he had known in his heart that it would have been impossible to make things work between them. A long-distance romance had never been on his mind and especially not with someone of the same sex.

And on the other hand he had felt slightly afraid of the situation he had gotten himself into this time. Even if it was true that Amane had been his closest friend, at the moment they had different people around them, new friends, new goals, new challenges. There just wasn’t any room for futile hope.

The most painful part of meeting him again had been the touch of his lips. It had made his own lips burn, and without really noticing it, Kaidou had been touching them with his fingertips whenever he had felt the subtle prickling. And ever since then he had tried to find something to soothe it but nothing had seemed to work. Perhaps the memory of the redhead was going to hunt him for the rest of his life.
