Chapter 1: Fishing- Noche, Odette, Odile

Noche was lurking quietly next to a fast flowing river when the two creatures fell from the sky. He had been trying to fish, using one of his tail feathers as a lure, but that had been rudely interrupted when two hissing chiros slammed into the river with a splash that completely drenched the small hawk. He let out a wail of protest and fled into a nearby tree to sulk. It didn't work so well, he kept having to pick dry, red leaves off of his feathers. Meanwhile, the two chiros clumsily splashed out on opposite sides of the river.

One had fur the same jet black as Noche’s, but she had a strange, cracked pattern edged in white that emanated from her face. The other was a snowy white, with the same cracked pattern in shades of dark along their extremities. The two chiros shook themselves off and began to eye each other again, but Noche had no intention of finding another fishing spot. This was his spot! Away from all the stupid large stryx that kept trying to collect him! He began to berate them, and finished with an irate screech.

While he sat their gasping for breath, pissed off and soaked, the light one said plaintively that they were hungry. Noche blinked in annoyance, and answered that if they wanted to fish they were free to do that, but no fighting. The dark one below his tree snickered in amusement, and Noche gave them a glare. Or at least tried too, they were nearly invisible in the pale light from the stars. They just shrugged. The light one introduced themselves as Odette, and the dark one was Odile. Noche introduced himself, then fluttered down from the tree to land on the ground.

Dry autumn leaves crunched under his claws, and his wings sent up flurries of the red-gold things. The dark water of the river ran swiftly in the shimmering moonlight, and he quickly gave the two strange chiros a brief rundown of the best spots to fish. The darkness of the night painted everything in different colors from the day, with the trees transformed into twisted specters, and the grass a rustling void, but Noche was nocturnal so he was more familiar with these tones. The pale chiro kept tripping though, so Noche was relieved when he finally set them up in their spot.

Odile apparently thought it was all rather amusing, and was humming to herself when Noche left her. Noche hopped over a pumpkin and briefly considered snapping up some of the large spiders clinging to it, then decided against it. He wanted to catch a fish and enjoy the darn thing. Keeping an eye on the two chiros, he dipped his tail feather in the swiftly running water and lit up a line of nokt to act as a lure.

He was so focused on watching the dark, swiftly flowing water and waiting for any sign of a fish that he didn’t notice the two chiros getting closer, until the dark one stuck her head over his shoulder and he fell over with a screech. Odette took the opportunity to hop over the water and pluck Noche’s tail feather from the water and hold it inquisitively. Odile crowded over too, nearly stepping on Noche as she bent down to examine his tail feathers.

Noche shrieked in protest and flailed around a bit until they moved away. He grumbled a bit, then explained that yes, he did glow, and yes it was perfectly natural, and no he would not give them feathers. Odette sulked a bit, but Odile shrugged and said she completely understood. The darn things were hard to grow back!

Noche tried to concentrate on fishing, but Odette kept staring at him. Noche decided that he was very done, and stared right back. The staring contest would have gone on for quite a while if Odile hadn’t suddenly exclaimed from further down the bank and held up a fish that was pretty much the size of her head.

Odette let out a shriek and ran over to try and steal it, and Odile leapt into the air, shrieking muffled insults around the fish in her mouth as she disapeared in the dark sky. Noche hissed in annoyance from his spot on the ground; they were scaring the fish away! He grumbled to himself as the two chiros shrieked at each other, they seemed to be having more fun than actually fighting over the fish.

Noche sighed, then felt something tug at his tail feather. He quickly turned, only to find the largest fish he had ever seen latch onto his tail feathers! The thing was nearly as big as he was!

He quickly yelled up at the two chiros above, telling them about the fish! More than enough to go around, even if someone wanted to be greedy! The two circling chiros quickly took notice, Odette diving down with a delighted yell to slam into the fish’ back. Odile was quick behind him, but she dropped her fish (carefully) on the bank before joining in.

Once his tail feathers were free, Noche quickly scuttled away from the splashing chaos. He eyes Odile’s previous fish, glanced back, grabbed it and ran off.

They wouldn’t need it anyway, they had that whole monster to eat now.
