Chapter 1: talisman

It was a normal day, aboard the cruiser, named ‘hunter’ scarf was going about his daily routine, the small padding about the open chamber, heading from the bed to an ensuite bathroom, and then to a closet, was scarf himself, first washing, and then heading to grab his tools. Being a mechanic aboard the cruiser, meant that he constantly carried tools around, it wasn’t easy to move the stuff around wasn’t particularly easy, but it was something he had to do, and so he grabbed the large toolbox, and began to lug the kit along with him, down a maintenance shaft, into the belly of the mechanical beast.

It was hot. Very very hot, down near the engines, where scarf was unfortunately stationed, he was working on fixing up some loose wiring, which had been causing small power-blips in the lower engines. This wasn’t too much trouble, as the ship’s pilots had set the ship to match the blip pattern for the time being, but it meant the journey was slower, which wasn’t ideal when ferrying living creatures halfway across the current galaxy. Meaning that the wiring needed to be fixed prompto.

It had been 3 hours when scarf managed to finally sort out the wiring.. Boy was that a mess. Thankfully this meant he no longer needed to spend as much time toiling away in the deep, warm and damp tunnels, but something called to him, through what he dubbed his mechanics sense, simply stated he tended to have an eye for broken machines, and how to fix them, even if they weren’t in plain sight he knew where broken objects. He followed his senses, looking for whatever it was that was triggering it. Down and down, deeper into the warm tunnels that made up the ship’s inner engine. It was getting hotter and hotter, which wasn’t feeling great for scarf.. That was, until he lay his eyes on the thing triggering his mechanics sense.. It was a small plate, shining with the light of the room, its surface was a deep silver with a blue diamond on it, and other than that it was normal.. Picking up the plate, he turned it over, wondering what in the stars that it could be.

When he turned it over, he saw the other side was just as unremarkable, so it seemed, and he decided to run a small paw over it, gleaming no reaction from it, until his paw touched the blue diamond in the middle, and it gave him a small shock. Thankfully, he kept hold of the plate, and touched the diamond, this time, and something just as strange happened. The diamond in the centre of the silver, changed from blue, to red, and the room’s heat seemed to fade in the background as the plate began to shimmer, and a large orange screen began to emanate from it, the plate sliding open to form a small deck, looking like a futuristic desk., the screen hovering above was orange, and had his name in it, which he found strange, as he had not spoken his own name near the object, nor had it asked for one. Underneath was the word “fire” and a list of tabs, none of which he pressed yet, unsure what to think of the new hovering plate, seemingly kept afloat with very localised plasma jets.

After some overview, it turned out he could store his tools within the plate, and it kept them, which seemed to ignore any physical laws that he knew of, but he was grateful for the ability to carry an almost weightless toolbox, and console with him anywhere, given the plate was small enough to fit in a medium knapsack, meaning he did not have to worry about lugging around his toolbox.

He thought to himself, and decided to keep the plate to himself.. Sure, he could take it to be studied, but they would take it and likely break it, leaving him back at square one, so he kept it, and thought nothing more, as he returned to his quarters, where he could resume a normal routine.. For the time being.
