Chapter 1: Book siting

Fedryck was hanging around the library when his friend asked him to babysit a mysterious book. They were wearing their usual grass stained t-shirt and khaki shorts. They have brown skin and brown eyes. He has sea dragon ears that are green and yellow, he also has a tail with colourful fins on it. The library was big and had a homey feel. It was rather busy as people dashed about and stressed over paperwork and homework. Fedryck’s friend dropped it off that afternoon. Fedryck stared at the book as he sat in the wooden chair with his long green tail curled under the table so no one would trip over it. The book looked like an old dictionary but for some reason he was told to never open it. Fedryck stared at the dusty old book curiously and picked it up from the table. He looked at the book while holding it from various angles without opening it. They put the book down and continued to work on some paperwork for the conservation area. People came and went and the sun changed positions in the sky by the time he was done. They let out a sigh of relief and stretched. His gaze drifted to the book, and he reached for it. He paused and looked around the almost empty library. They picked up the book then opened it a little and peaked inside. It looked like a normal old book on the outside as well.

“What?” Fedryck mumbled then opened it all the way.

A blinding light suddenly erupted from the book. Fedryck covered his eyes, and then the light faded. They blinked a few times and looked around. They weren’t in the library anymore but a white void with black blobs in the background.

“So this is why they told me not to open it.” They said their thought out loud.

Since the only thing around was the black blobs in the background, he went to them. It took longer than they thought it would take because it looked closed but it was quite far. Fedryck realized that the blobs were actually words. It was formatted exactly like a dictionary. However, the words were giant so Fedryck told some steps back to read them. At the bottom of the words was a page number. Confused on what to do with the words, they approached the number and touched it. Something chimed and more words appeared on the right of the cluster.

“Maybe I can touch the other words?” They wondered.

They jumped and touched the word ‘the’ and nothing happened.

“Wait do I have to get to the end of the book to get out?”

He cursed and tapped the next number. The same thing happened and another ‘page’ appeared. They groaned.

“This is gonna take awhile…”

Fedryck realized something.

“Wait, it’s an instant reaction. If I run I can keep the pages popping up.” He theorized.

They crouched in a ready position next to the page number 2, tapped it and ran. He got to page number 20 until he needed a break. He rested and tried again but this time he just walked. They walked for what seemed like hours or even days tapping the numbers automatically out of muscle memory. That is until he tapped the number and nothing happened. They stopped dead in their tracks and stared at the number. No chime, no new page, nothing. His breathing hitched and his eyes widened.

“No.” They whispered. “It can’t end like this. What do I do now?”

He let out a nervous laugh and touched the number again. This time they heard a crashing sound to their left, so they looked. They saw pages upon pages swiftly crashing to the ground. His page was next and he barely had time to dodge the onslaught of letters. As soon as it started, it was all over. Fedryck blinked and they were back in the library holding a closed book. A worker tapped his shoulder and he flinched.

“Sir, we are closing soon.”

“Oh okay.” They said nervously.

He gathered his things from around the table and rushed home. They immediately shoved the book into a locked safe and didn’t open it until their friend came to get it back.
