Death of a Geisha

Posted Jul 13, 2005, 8:30:50 AM UTC
This is derived from a photograph taken in the 70s or 80s, I believe. I have the book on my shelf - it's all about the Life of Geisha in Japan.. At least, in one specific house that did not offer the sexual practises. The writing reads as follows:

Tradition in Japan is epitomized in the Geisha. The young geisha dutifully serve their elders while listfully stealing glances towards the happy young couples walking hand-in-hand down the moonlit paths below. No one notices the tiny line of smoke rising in the distance. The fire approached the house only after all the women were abed. Panic struck throughout the building and the girls dashed outside in their night-time kimonos. In the hustle and confusion, one Geisha was trapped in the acidic smoke. She never made it out. This tale has since been known as the Death of a Geisha, and those involved often had nightmares afterward of a young voice crying "okaasan!" out of the flames.

What a beautiful pic! Love the colour scheme you've used. The layout is very original and fits the subject very well.

This, believe it or not, was my first attempt at using my watecolour pencils, so I only used one colour, just to see how they worked. I was rather pleased with the result, I think, at the time... Which isn't surprising since it's two years old. Thanks for all the support, luv!

Greg accidentally hit the 'reply' button. He's not a site member, so mistakes happen. Tongue

Hahaha The worst of it all is that I didn't do it 'accidentally'! lol I thought that clicking on 'Reply' was the common way to post a message!!!

I noticed the window under the pic, the one that enables to start a new 'thread'... but too late! :-/

Kichi and Robin, sorry for the inconvenience! ;-)

*giggle* It's still 'accidentally' if you don't know the system, Greg dahling. You're all forgiven. Wink

Embarrassed You's gonna break the button, jumping on it like that! Laughing Sorry.

Yep... I believe when i painted it I had been going through that stage where I just missed being somewhere else... The only real 'somewhere else' I've ever been is Japan, so as a consequence...
          • Jul 13, 2005, 11:11:20 AM UTC
:psst: I done think I broke'd it oncet already...Don't tell RED! You see, I did the same thing to someone else, and, well...Got a little carried away... Doh
Yay, an experience to share! I know you had told me before I left, but where did you spend your time there?
            • Jul 13, 2005, 11:15:26 AM UTC
Well, I was staying with a family in a little town called Azuma-Machi. We travelled to Tokyoo nd surrounding areas, and I climbed Mount Tsukuba with my family there, too... But most of the amazingness was just being with the family... Especially my obaasan. There was one night I was walking to go to my bed in the other house (One house had the kitchen, living room, tatami room, mom's bedroom and my brothers' bedrooms, the other my twin and I and the great-grandparents and the grandma)... Anywho, I was walking outside to go to my bedroom, and she beckoned me over to sit with her in front of this shrine they had set up in the tatami room... She taught me how to honour her dead son - the father of the family, in her Japanese style... It was the most amazing experience I've ever had.

Man...That's why I want to go back to Japan. I want to experience it's lifestyle and everyday culture. Granted I'm so incredibly greatful that I was able to experience it as I did, but it wasn't my last trip there.
When we were doing our touring and such, I kept thinking to myself that this would be the only time I'd get to be there; but now that I'm back home, I miss it, and really want to delve into the home life experience there.
Thank you so much for sharing that with me! It just fuels my want to go back. And what an experience! That's so neat...
                • Jul 13, 2005, 11:22:52 AM UTC
Yes, for me - if it weren't for my obaasan, I don't think I would have enjoyed it nearly so much. I'm not very much a tourist kind of person - I love the sights there are to see, but I'm more interested in learning the culture - what it's like to live there, and to be immersed in the lifestyle. Maybe someday I'll learn...

My God Minimaid, this drawing is absolutely splendid! Her face evokes so much sadness, it is very intense.
    • Jul 13, 2005, 10:58:36 AM UTC
I think this woman did hold a certain sadness - right up to her death. The story in my book describes her as always cheering everyone up with her youthfull bubbliness, but she was a very very lonely woman... *sigh*
      Thanks for the great compliments!
      • Jul 13, 2005, 3:24:34 PM UTC
Your drawing describes very well this feeling of loneliness and sadness, poor woman!
  • Jul 13, 2005, 6:00:22 AM UTC
Hey Minimaid, this is absolutely gorgeous. Its amazing, what did you use? The shade is perfect, her face has such a quality, sad and sullen... this is one of my new fav Minimaid! There's just one thing, maybe im wrong, but i feel like there's something wrong with her left eye.

Love it ,love it ,love it!!!!!!
    • Jul 13, 2005, 10:51:11 AM UTC
I used watercolou pencils for this.. Just one shade, nothing else. It's on rice paper.

I don't see what is wrong with her left eye.. perhaps you could be more specific?

Thanks SO much, luv, for the favourite, and the comment.
      • Jul 13, 2005, 3:01:24 PM UTC
I feel like the left eye doesn't look at the same place of the other one, i dunno why, my eyes keep going back to that eye, i think its because of the right eye ,whose pupil is not quite the same shade of the left one...let me check...yeah i think thats it!
        • Jul 13, 2005, 3:07:46 PM UTC
Hurm... Well, in all honesty, I think it must be in the scan. I can't see anything of that sort going on in the original... *goes off to dwell on picture problems*
          • Jul 13, 2005, 3:09:08 PM UTC
Or maybe there is something wrong with me, who knows, i might have some defect in my brain. Wink (its very lickely)Laughing
            • Jul 13, 2005, 3:14:58 PM UTC
No, I'm sure it's there... But you know how sometimes if you've seen a picture enough, it's near impossible to find anything different from what you've been seeing for that long time? That's what's happened to me. I've been looking at this one fo two whole years, and until now - I haven't seen or had any errors pointed out to me.
              • Jul 17, 2005, 5:06:32 PM UTC
Oh yeah its true, the eyes does get accustom to a pic, that's what happened with my lastest Veggie...humph...Well, she is beautiful, i just noticed the porcelain look of her skin: Thats what i love about art, you can always find something you haven't seen before and be mesmerized all over again!!!!!
