"Do they [the character] just want an excuse to travel through as many portals as possible as fast as possible?" Yes. That is the only reason Penny is helping. This would give her a once in a lifetime opportunity to get a quick glance at all of the worlds and help her plan which one she wants to visit next. If she finds Portal Posi during this, great! If she doesn't, well she tried.
