I never thought of Elphaba as evil. Not evil much, really. People just misunderstood her. Then again...ive never seen the broadway production..only the book, so Im not sure how they differ.
I have yet to see the play myself, though I plan on it. I do have the soundtrack, and the music is excellent. It seems as though the play portrays her as an outcast, spurned by her fellows because of her looks. It kinda spirals out of control from there. It's actually kinda sad.

Again, wonderful art!
