She was made of porcelain crafted with magic that could keep her alive. The sprout is caused by a seedling that was used to bring her to life. It is more accurate to say the soul of the seedling uses the doll body to exist akin to a person.

She was made many years ago, by a man who has lost his own child and wife in an accident. He created Etch in his daughter's image but found she was not only very different in personality, but also in expressions, wants, and desires. She also proclaimed her own name before he could bestow one upon her.

As she has the ability to live as long as the seedling, she tragically outlived him. Although not having a way to mourn or really understand her emotions, she struggles to learn why she does not feel the desire to leave his old cottage, nor why she feels more hollow than before.
