Chapter 2: Trail Gone Cold

When finding out what to do about my future, it seemed pretty obvious to find out about my past. I killed a seemingly important man, but who was he? More importantly why did I do it? I have no memories before the killing. I'm lucky that Tash has hung around with me. Even though she's a bit of a killjoy, stopping me from killing bandits, she's quite the huntress. She's tracked a lead to this greenhouse here. The owner of the greenhouse was apperently close friends of the person I killed. We're hoping to ask the guy a few questions.

"The greenhouse has that can't-look-in-but-you-can-look-out-kinda glass, huh. How's that work? Magic?" I ask.

"I'm not sure." Says Tash. "But the sign says it's closed."

"We can change the buisness hours can't we?" I say. Tash sighs.

"Are you sure we should be doing this?" She asks.

"Ah, c'mon. Something tells me that the guy I killed wasmn't the creme-of-the-crop, upstanding citizen considering the kind of people that have been trying to kill me for the past couple months. C'mon." I knock the door to make a point, but it budges open. Tash and I look at each other. I draw my sword, and she readies her bow. We sneak in, and find out the building has been put to spectacular use.

I'm always rather adverse to entering a closed building with weapons drawn. But with a building like this it seemed like sacrilege. The greenhouse had a carefully curated selection of plants from across the realms. But bringing plants out of their home enviorments is difficult and requires constant care for each of the planets. All yhe plants here are wilted though. They likely hadn't been cared for for days. But as I feel the stone embedded in my bow, I sense a presence at the other end of the greenhouse. I motion to Nat to move ahead, finally after rounding one corner, we find this presence. A dark-skinned elf was holding a dead man in her arms.

"Ma'am, are you okay?" I ask. The elf looks up with hate in her eyes. Her tears dry quickly, and she rushes me with a knife. Nat instctively grabs the elve's arm and pins her to the ground. I see flames starting to form in her off-hand.

"Nat-!" I yell, but a thud on the roof distracts all of us. Before we could finish the tense beat, the roof shatters, and a downward gust of wind sent the glass straight to earth. I grabbed Nat and pulled her under a cover of a thick tree. It didn't completely protect us, but it saved us to being cut to ribbons. Hunched on all fours over the dark-skinned elf was a robed catgirl, gnawing her teeth with feral eyes.
