Chapter 2: A Gooey Encounter

See, Oliver was originally planning on sleeping outside tonight.

Now, he knew he’d either had to sleep indoors, or find a different place to sleep.

He was NOT about to sleep on grass that had been slimed and covered in other who-knows-what liquids.

An hour earlier…

Oliver had been walking for the past hour when he finally found this wonder of nature.

It was a grassy plain that stretched on and on and on. And there was literally nothing else.

That was the beauty of it.

“Seriously? We’re going to sleep here tonight?” rang a voice from his head.

Oliver frowned. “Be quiet Mephisto. It’s a good opportunity for you to learn to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors.”

“Nah, I’m good. I’d rather sleep on a bed, INSIDE. It’s more comfortable, and it’s warmer. I don’t get it with you humans and ‘enjoying nature.’ Sure, it’s good to go touch some grass sometimes, but that doesn’t mean you gotta sleep outside!”

Oliver’s frown deepened, this time for different reasons. He was afraid Mephisto did have a point. Not that Oliver would ever give him the satisfaction of knowing that.

“Plus, if you’re going to sleep outside, find a different place. We got company here,” said Mephisto.

“What do you mean, company?”

“Here, I’ll show you.”

Immediately, Oliver could feel something turning his head to the right. He tried to resist, but then he noticed something.

Out in the distance, he could see a blueish-green, gooey creature that was slowly making its way toward him.

Oliver silently swore under his breath.

“That’s a Slime, in case you didn’t know,” Mephisto piped up. “It’s a bit annoying because it can regenerate its body, but from my read on its power aura, you should be able to take care of him easily.”

Oliver laughed dryly. “Easy for you to say. You realize I’ve only been able to use 3 out of your 9 Ring spells?”

“It’s fine, you should be able to beat this guy with only the three,” Mephisto simply said.

Oliver sighed, then almost immediately charged at the Slime.

“Mephisto First Ring: Trickery Blast!”

A fireball flew from Oliver’s chest and hit the Slime point blank. It visibly recoiled, but after a couple seconds, seemed to recover. It jumped forward at Oliver, surprisingly far for a creature with no legs.

Mephisto First Ring: Trickery Blast

A fireball that homes in on the caster’s enemies. Unfortunately, it doesn’t do a lot of damage.

Oliver just barely dodged to the side, before casting another spell:

“Mephisto Second Ring: Deceitful Chains!”

Flaming chains shot at the slime and entangled him. However, being an amorphous creature, it easily slipped between the gaps in the chains.

Mephisto Second Ring: Deceitful Chains

An attack that opens up six rifts (gates of hell) behind the caster and summons magma chains. These magma chains evaporate all enchantments and magic, and prevent anyone restrained in them from using magic. However, they disappear after five seconds.

Oliver swore loudly, then jumped back just in time to avoid another attack by the Slime.

“You said this would be easy!” Oliver practically shouted.

“Yeah, that’s what I thought. Obviously I was wrong,” said Mephisto with a yawn.

Oliver raised his hands and used his third and final spell:

“Mephisto Third Ring: Calamity Grandsword!”

A huge, flaming greatsword appeared in his hands. Oliver had trouble swinging it, but managed to slice the slime in half. However, the two parts immediately fused back together.

Mephisto Third Ring: Calamity Grandsword

A huge flaming sword that can cleanly cut through substances as hard as steel. However, the sword is extremely big, making it hard to control.

“Mephisto, we’re screwed!”

Mephisto yawned again.

“Why don’t you just be better and learn Ring Four?”

“It took me six months just to learn Ring Three! Now you’re telling me to learn Ring Four?!”

“That’s your issue, not mine.”

Oliver really wanted to yell, but he didn’t exactly have the time to. The Slime was inching ever closer, and decided to jump at him again. He just managed to dodge it.

“What even is Ring Four?”

“It's like a finger gun, I’m pretty sure? Anyways, go figure it out.”

Oliver took a shaky breath and raised his hands.

“Mephisto Fourth Ring: Kugel Impact!”

Oliver felt a tight pain in his chest. This is what happens when you try to learn Spells prematurely.

He grimaced and raised his hands in a finger-gun position. Immediately, a small flaming bullet formed at the edge of his index finger, before firing at max speed towards the Slime. When it touched the Slime, it exploded in a huge flame, incinerating the Slime’s core and scattering it’s goo everywhere.

Mephisto Fourth Ring: Kugel Impact

A tiny fire bullet that shoots at top speed towards the caster’s enemies. When it hits, it explodes in a huge, magnificent flame.

Oliver clutched his chest and winced. The pain was almost unbearable.

“See? What did I tell you, you were able to learn Ring Four!”

Oliver merely grunted.

“Although, I think we need to find another place to sleep tonight.”
