Chapter 2: The Club

Raena Jones pushed open the staff door that led into the small nightclub. Helena was sitting with her back to the bar. Her long, chestnut hair was damp and unkempt and her robe was slightly wrinkled.
Raena walked up behind her, "Rough night?"
Helena jumped and the ice in her glass rattled. She set the glass on the bar as a small flood of curse words hidden in a sigh erupted from her mouth. She turned around and smiled weakly, "Hey, Rae."
Rae sat down on a stool behind the bar, pulling her thick, wool robe tighter around her, "What's wrong?"
Rae had a very humble beauty about her. She was very shy and she never showed any skin. She always wore long skirts or pants and never any low cut shirts. She always wore her hair in a bun at the nape of her neck and never wore any make-up of any kind. It wasn't that she was unattractive; she was beautiful. She just didn't want to draw attention to herself.
Now, sitting at the bar at four thirty in the morning, sipping at a cup of Bacardi, she was brimming with natural beauty. Her ebony hair, straight and shining, flowed down her back to her waist and it shimmered around her heart shaped face with every elegant movement of her head. Her sparkling gray eyes glowed with youth and beauty.
"Why would anything be wrong?" Helena asked.
Rae raised her eyebrows and looked into Helena's downcast, amethyst eyes. They were filled with fear and anger.
"How'd you know?"
"I could hear you."
"Was I crying?"
"I'd say more like screaming."
"It was that loud?"
"I thought maybe you'd left the T.V. on." Raena smirked.
"I'm sorry if I woke you. Just a weird dream."
"What about?"
"Don't know."
"Can you remember anything?" Rae urged.
"Not really." She avoided Rae's eyes.
They sat in silence listening to the hum of the lights and the creaks of an old building.
Finally, Rae asked, "Who's Elijah?"
The fear in Helena's eyes disappeared and the anger turned to fury. "How do you know about Elijah?!"
Rae knew she had hit a sour note. "I heard you cry out his name."
Helena stood up and slammed her glass on the bar.
Rae recoiled as if she had been slapped. Her eyes filled with tears and her throat felt as if it was closing.
"Keep your nose out of my life!" Helena hurried out through the staff door.
Rae stared at the closed door choking back her sobs in stunned silence. Her eyes burned as tears rolled down her cheeks. She didn't understand what had just happened, but she knew that Helena's words hurt her feelings and stung her fragile heart.
She slowly emptied her glass and Helena's and put them under the bar. Then, she left the club through the door Helena had just stormed out of and headed back to her suite weeping.
