Untitled: Surprise

     "Hello." Kat said as she looked up. When she saw the man who had just walked in, her heart sped up and her stomach filled with butterflies. He was handsome. He had dark hair; long and wild, the strands pouring over his eyebrows and down his temples. He had a strong face with gentle features that was filled with confidence. He was tall and walked with long strides.
     He looked over at the customer with Becky and Kat dropped her eyes. Of course he looked over at her. She was beautiful. Why did she ever get her hopes up? She sighed as she continued to flip through the pages of her magazine.
     Then, as she was about to turn another page, he put his hand on top of hers. Soft hands. Her breath caught in her throat as she looked up into his sapphire eyes. They were so beautiful and serious.
     "Can..." She swallowed the lump in her throat. "Can I help you?"
     He glanced over his shoulder. "I need to talk to you."
     "Okay."
     "Privately."
     She looked over at Becky, slightly nervous. "I'm sorry, but-"
     "It's about your father."
     Her breath caught in her throat again. It wasn't butterflies that took her breath this time. It was fear.
     "Becky, I'm going out back for a cigarette." She stepped out from behind the counter and motioned for him to follow her out the back.
