"Inuyasha stop a second, would you?"

"What is it?"

Inuyasha had stopped running and set Kagome down with an irritated scowl. Kilala, landing nearby, crouched down to let Sango, Miroku, and Shippo join the couple. They looked expectantly at Kagome, who was staring off into the distance.

"Why did we stop, Kagome, did you finally get Inuyasha to let us eat? I’m soooooo hungry!"

"Not just yet Shippo but this should hold you for a bit."

Kagome handed the little kitsune a sucker from her backpack, still staring towards a distant forest.

"It’s faint but I’m sure I sense a Shikon Jewel shard in that direction."

"Then what are we standing around for? Get on, Kagome."

Inuyasha took off as soon as Kagome climbed onto his back. A little more slowly the others jumped onto Kilala. When they were airborne, Shippo began to pout,

"That jerk is always in such a rush. It’s not fair. I’m STARVING!"

"Shippo, you know we have to get to the shard before whatever has it moves out of range for Kagome to sense it. Inuyasha is entirely in the right to have us hurry. Sango was I mistaken or did I see you take something from Kagome’s bag?"

"Oh these?" Sango held up a bag of chips and a bottle of water. "I thought someone might not be satisfied with only a sweet in his stomach."

She laughed as Shippo hopped into her lap and tore open the bag eagerly.

"You’re great, Sango. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!"

"I completely agree" Miroku added groping her rear.

She placed a steadying hand on Shippo, the half turned to give Miroku a slap that almost knocked him right off of Kilala.

"Keep you hands to yourself, you pervert."

The group had reached the edge of the forest after stopping at a near by village to find out about any demonic activity in the area. Miroku was gazing longingly at the out line of the village, which had held a number of lovely maidens. The others were peering into the forest, talking amongst each other.

"Kagome, are you sure the fragment is here? The villagers said they haven’t seen a demon in a very long time."

"Yes, I’m certain the fragment is in there somewhere. What’s wrong, Inuyasha?"

"I smell smoke, and I think there’s a demon’s scent also but it’s a weak scent under the smoke. Miroku, do you sense a demonic aura? MIROKU!!!!! Quit daydreaming about those wenches, we have worked to do, damn pervert!"

Miroku jumped, a bit startled from being so obvious, and looked into the forest. Trying to ignore the death looks he was receiving from Kagome and Sango, he nodded his head. Just as he began to speak three men crashed through the trees.

"RUN! Two fire-demons are after us! They’ll kill everyone!!"

Seeing that nothing seemed to be following the frightened men too close, Miroku tilted his staff a bit causing the first man to topple and the other two fell over him.

"Please, forgive me. I see nothing following you. Would one of you gentlemen tell us what has happened to cause such a flight?"

The monk gestured back to the forest, where his friends had tensed in preparation for a battle that was obviously not going to happen anytime soon. The men followed the gesture with their eyes and after a moment when nothing charged at them from the darkness of the forest, one spoke up.

"We were walking through the woods minding our own business, when this beautiful woman stepped into the clearing ahead of us. She beckoned us to her and we were powerless to resist. We should have known she was a demon by the flaming color of her hair, but at the time all we could see was her beauty. When we were almost next to her, her mate jumped out from behind the demon-woman to devour us. We had to run for our lives!"

The other two men were nodding empathetically as the man finished speaking. Kagome leaned towards Sango, her eyes sparkling mischievously, and whispered,

"It must be true. There’s no way any human girl would call to them. I bet even the female demon was planning on letting her mate have them, they look as bad as they smell."

The girls and Shippo (who had been hanging on Kagome’s shoulder) burst out laughing. Miroku and the three men stared at them with puzzled expressions. Inuyasha, smirking from overhearing the comment with his sharp ears, looked at the men and said,

"Ignore them, they’re insane. I’ll take care of those demons. You can scram and stay out of my way now."

The men nodded and with one last look at the laughing girls, they left. Following behind Inuyasha and Miroku, the girls slowly regained their composure. As they went deeper into the forest Sango got a pensive look on her face.

"I’ve got a bad feeling about this. Those men left a path that anyone could follow blind folded, yet the demons didn’t come after them. It doesn’t make sense if they went through all the trouble of luring those guys in the first place."

"Well they did say the female was beautiful, maybe her mate chose to indulge other appetites before feasting on humans."

"Feh, do you ever think about anything other than sex, Miroku? I don’t give a shit why they let those guys go, one of them has a jewel shard and I’m gonna kill the fucker and get it."

The group had reached the clearing and stopped in surprise. The female demon was off to one side of them being blasted with a stream of fire from the other side where her mate stood in full demon form. She lowered the barrier she had been protecting herself with as the flames stopped. Seeing her clearly now the group noted she was slightly taller than Sango with long flaming auburn hair. She had the front half pulled up into a bun that was secured by chopsticks and the rest cascaded to her hips in a wild stream of curls. She was wearing a cropped black tee-shirt and hip hugging black pants that left her midriff bare. Around her hips was a utility belt that had many various size compartments and hanging from the side they could see, was a large dagger in a blood red sheath. On her thigh was an intricate sheath of the same color. It housed three more daggers which were smaller than the one on her hip. The largest of these was in the center crossed by the other two forming an X. It looked like she had a similar set up on her other side. Each of her fists held daggers about the size of the one they could see on her hip. The one closest to them was held tip up, covered with blood, in a defensive angle. The other was held tip down and its purple-tinted blade looked to be newly drawn.

"Inuyasha, I don’t detect a demonic aura around that woman"

"I know, Miroku. She’s human."
