Chapter 1: Two Antique Limericks

I have always had a pet penchant for the limerick. It is such a simple, bouncy, silly form of poetry... sort of a haiku for idiots. Here are a couple I thought up when I was about nine years old. At that tender age I had a dream of writing the biggest book of limericks the universe had ever seen. However, I think I only managed to produce these two back then. And although I've written many more since, I still haven't got enough limericks to fill a book the size of Sicily. Ah, dreams, they come to us, they swell to the size of over-inflated balloons, then, like voluminous balloons that are inexpertly tethered, they fly off in a crazy figure 8 "goodbye" making a long, receding farting noise:

===========================================

There was an old man from New York
Who began to choke on some pork
He yelled for his wife
Who ended his life
By digging it out with a fork

===========================================

A sailor one day while out sailing
Thought he heard something screaming and wailing
The source of the shout
As he later found out
Was an octopus tied to the railing
