Chapter 3: Boss Battle - Deep Regret

7. Draw or write about a time your character did the wrong thing for what they thought was a good reason.

It was one of those days where Istornim couldn’t fall asleep, despite his partner, Viiris, laying right next to him. He even got physical, one arm wrapped around the warm torso of the dark elf. With a sigh said man placed one hand on the head of the other and gently stroked past it a few times to absorb that he was really there. His soft breathing anchoring him in the here and now.

Thoughts spiraled. He didn’t often feel remorse for his actions, afterall his occupation is one needed to keep society safe and to rid the world of dirty scum. Unfortunately though it happened that those innocent came to die by his hands, even though he himself was so sure of having killed the right person.

Misinformation was spread, false witness reports given, strings pulled by those who wanted to see someone specific depart. It was a burden he and all those working for the safety of the city had to carry, never knowing if someone was actually innocent or not.

Tonight he was haunted by one specific face. The scared expression of an elderly man who got convicted of murder. Him begging for his life, for being allowed to spend his last years with his beloved wife. It caused Istornim’s guts to twist. He was so sure about his gut feeling after Viiris brought him in.

He didn’t look like a murderer, no, but the things he supposedly did added up with his routine.

Mere weeks later, after he was disposed of, it came to light that everything was staged. Someone was after his money and got his wife killed by an assassin as well. It was a tragedy. Not to the city itself but to Istornim and Viiris.

Regularly he thought about said man, his desperate eyes. Not because he was about to be killed, no, he was desperate because he didn’t want to leave his wife alone.

It turned into a reoccuring nightmare.
