Story Summary

A small collection of information concerning my own world, specifically for the continent of Mepara. It's where a few of my own cast come from (mainly Dante and Lawrence) and is a bit wonky for the time being but a few nice folks have shown some interest in learning more so- here it is!

There will be minor talk of religious themes, cultural, social, and talk of demon biology in later chapters so if that's not if interest feel free to skip it.

Chapter 2: Culture - Volettelings

Culture

Culture and tradition is the heart of  Volettling society. Every section each developed their own customs while they were in isolation from each other, but once they were free to travel and meet each other they exchanged practices. Over time the practices also merged and changed. Dates of worship in particular shifted and lined up with other lesser demon types, or split off entirely to make new days while retaining the original.

Leaf litter:

  • Leaf litter demons value traveling, and learning about new cultures and worlds. They never stay for long and like to blow through new places unless they are settling down. Leaf litter demons are incharge of interdimensional travel and trade. It's not uncommon for a leaf litter demon take up a job that requires lots of moving (mail runner, traveling artist, messenger, traveling circus/acts, etc.

Chalk:

  • Chalk demons adore nothing more than expression through art. Big elaborate chalk drawings get swapped out in common areas of towns as a sign of welcoming new travelers and showing respect to the greater demons. Getting the honor to make one of these drawings is seen as a once in a lifetime opportunity to show off and express yourself to the greater demons. Graffiti is also highly regarded, but not on the same level as a ceremonial mural.

  • The natural washing of the murals and graffiti from rain or wind is seen as something to start anew, and that is welcomed.

Bone (and flesh):

  • Bone demons value the sciences and how the world works. Biology is their main focus but it's a case by case for each of their interests of study. Bone demon’s spend large amounts of time reading books, writing down their own findings, and trying to get their name on an important discovery they can present to the greater demons.

  • Administrative work is also favored by bone demons, with political and social programs run by bone demons.
  • Healthcare workers are often bone demons.

Ash and Soot:

  •  Ash demons value business and trading goods. They also have a big belief in following tradition and their destiny when it comes to merchentry. The society often is built off of long running family businesses spanning multiple generations.

  • The only way to leave a family business is to marry out into another. Divorce is seen as a huge deal as its the fracturing of not only a marriage, but a business. There are a few exeptions but there is still a stigma around it.

  • New business is rare in well established communities. If they need something new, they turn to outsourcing.

Shells:

  • Shell demons love collecting and creating things to adorn themselves. Looks are at the top of their values, less so changing physical looks, more so the things you wear to compliment features. Rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and other body jewelry are what they are interested in most.

  • Families have unique styles and signatures in jewelry. When a couple weds, the first thing they do as a union is make a matching set of jewelry using both families signature styles incorporated.

Shards:

  • Shard demons value innovation most. Anything to strive for new forms of technology and improving old tech. Forging and building things is their calling. New tools, weapons, blades, and masonry are constantly being produced to benefit all the demons.

  • Shards families sometimes follow a specific craft to improve on. (ex. A family who only specializes in shears, knitting needles, mallots, nails, etc.) and will pass on this craft to thier children.

Dust:

  • Dust demons are all about terraforming and making areas unique and sustainable. They love to clean and plan out both natural and urban spaces, mostly favoring the former. You can find dust demons dispersed around the continents doing work in governments for most any position concerning planning and managing amenities/public works projects.

  • Families are close knit and prefer to live in smaller homes that preserve space and are easier to clean.
