Wow, that sucks. Leave it to idiots with no lives to ruin ours... Hey, maybe you could add a "delete comment" option to each comment that is made on writings/pictures. That way if there's anything a user deems inappropriate or mean or offensive, they can remove it, too.

Ugh!!! Those scum-sucking, gutter-dwelling, spam bastards! The next time these sub-human primordial parasites sit down at the computer to write their little spam programs, I hope they get hungry, go to eat a can of spam that expired in 1945 then go into anaphylactic shock and die!  Then when they are in hell they can write spamming programs for Satan the rest of all eternity since they love it so dang much!  Yes indeed, spammers deserve a special reserved circle in hell .

We have a delete button but only mods have access to it. I think perhaps it would be a good idea to give that power to the person who posted the content being spammed upon also.

There's only one problem with that though. if the comment is deleted by the artists/writers, i can't retreive the IP address of the person who posted the spam, and therefore can't IP block him/her.

I may need to employ some sort of thing like on other sites where you have an image with letters in it and the person posting the comment will have to match the letters and numbers in the image. You know what I'm talking about? This would only have to be for people posting comments who are not logged in. I have a PHP book that will tell me how to create one of those things.

I still like the idea of giving the artists/writers power to delete comments on their own work. They should have that power.

EBS, this DOES make everyone angry. What gives them the right to spam someone elses site? It's practically defacing private property! They make me almost as angry as plagiarists!

Perhaps the artists/writers can have the ability to remove the comment from their artwork, but instead of actually being permanently deleted it could go into a special folder/section where you could still gain access to the IP address?

actually what we could do is add another field to the table to have the comment hidden  = true or false. And when the user clicks to delete a comment, it is really just set to hidden and wont display for anyone except the moderators. We use the same tactic on the chatbox on PDM.

While we're at it, should we add an option on the comments about privacy, just like with a guest book. So someone posting a comment can make it public or private. if set to private, only the artist/writer can view the comment.

I was getting spammed like crazy on my guestbook (it's a Viper guestbook if anyone cares) until I went through the forum and found a bit of coding for a spam code. Added that in and the spam vanished instantly. (The same kind of thing you have to enter for MM, but this one works!) If you want to see what I have, you can check it out or post a test message there - http://pixelgoddesscloset.com/guestbook/ The point is (I had one, honest :) ) maybe you can add a simple spam code - because once they start, you can't block their IPs fast enough.

Yeah Pixelgoddess, that is EXACTLY what I need. i just need to find the code for one of those.

EDIT: A book I just got on PHP code explains it step by step how to implement one of those things. I will implement it asap.
