Story Summary

So this is based on the play 'The Crucible'. If you've never read it you really should it's awesome and it would help to understand what these diary entries are about. It was originally a writing assignment for my American Lit. class but I was so happy with it that I decided to post it. I had to choose a character from the play and write a diary of what is happening in the play in the characters point of view. The play is based on the Salem witch trials so I hope you guys enjoy.

Chapter 5: Entry 5

Dear Diary,

It is all on me now. I have the choice to put an end to this or to drag it out until every person in Salem is in shackles. Mr. Proctor took me to the court and my voice seemed to escape from me as Judge Danforth questioned and questioned me. It is to much for me to bare but reluctantly I did confess that I saw no spirits in that court room or ever and that poppet was mine and not Goody Proctor’s

Judge Danforth summoned Abby and the others by the looks on their faces they seem not to be pleased with me. Judge Danforth questions Abby about the accusations, of course she said they were all true, that all tried to send their spirits to do harm unto others. I want her to tell the truth, I want her to stop this, to end this selfish scheme to win Mr. Proctor. She did this all for herself! It was never in the best interest of everyone but only for herself. Pretense it were all pretense.

Suddenly she claims that I attack her. She turned on me and like a game the other girls follow her lead. I knew this would happen...I should have kept quiet. Abby will kill me now! She will seek revenge on me. She will cut my throat in the dead of night just like she said she would. Mr. Proctor saves me from my fear and he finally confesses that he committed adultery with her and Goody Proctor is brought in to confirm it, but being the good woman she is she saves her husbands name.

Abby starts with it again claiming that a yellow bird, my spirit, wants to claw her face. I send no spirits out to no body she’s lying again! The girls follow once again repeating word after word that leaves my mouth. Judge Danforth tells me I will hang if I don’t confess to witchcraft. What am I to do? What am I to do? The girls run screaming through the village claiming that I’m out for blood and as much as I beg an plead it is all for naught. God condemns liars...then I shall be condemned...I am not lion hearted. Broken and at my wits end I accuse Mr. Proctor the one who sees Abby for what she is. A good man only guilty of loving his wife and family shall be shackled and thrown on the cold stone floor of a jail cell. All at the false word of Mary Warren the mouse hearted.
