Story Summary

So this is based on the play 'The Crucible'. If you've never read it you really should it's awesome and it would help to understand what these diary entries are about. It was originally a writing assignment for my American Lit. class but I was so happy with it that I decided to post it. I had to choose a character from the play and write a diary of what is happening in the play in the characters point of view. The play is based on the Salem witch trials so I hope you guys enjoy.

Chapter 6: Entry 6

Dear Diary,

Abigail is gone. She left on a ship with Mercy Lewis. She took Reverend Parris’ money. Giles Corey was pressed until the very breath was crushed from him. Mr. Proctor and Rebecca Nurse are to hang today if they do not confess to witchcraft. If they confess to compacting with The Devil they’ll be set free. If they plead innocent and that they lead good lives they hang. It seems not to make sense but what are they to do?

It is all my fault! I sent Mr. Proctor to jail...I sent him to his death. If I stayed true to myself this would have been over the day Abigail accused Tituba. There are no words...there are none. I’ve sent many to their deaths and for what? Because I was scared of one that intimidated me so easily. It was a selfish game Abby played and I played right along side her, fainting, claiming to see spirits when I saw none. It is not right what we’ve done.  It was my job to seek out The Devil in Salem and instead I am the one doing The Devil’s work killing and jailing those who do not deserve it. I am his Black Hand and I should meet that bristled noose not Goody Nurse and Mr. Proctor.

I’m not Mary Warren any more I am spineless, I am one who hides from what she believes in, I am not Mr. Proctor’s servant but The Devil’s, I am a mouse, afraid of the world. And now the sun is rising...no it represents not birth but yet decay and death.

What will become of Mr. Proctor’s children? What will become of Goody Proctor who is soon expecting? It is all because of me...I could have ended it...I could have. It is all because of me... I am to blame, I am to blame. I must stop for if I keep writing tears will wipe the ink from the paper.
