Chapter 4
Third Night

"Love?" Inu Yasha and Kagome both gasped.  "I don't think so!", they cried in unison, as if
by rote.  They ignored everyone's amusement and headed to the car.
"Let's just get this over with already." Inu Yasha snapped.
"I'll talk to you guys later!" Kagome said, glaring at her friends, a hint of warning in her voice.
Eri, Ayumi, and Yuki all sported various expressions of worry and guilt before they turned and
headed off.  Mrs. Higurashi got in and started the car as Sota bounded between the silent pair.

The trip to the mall was painless if you ignored the tension between Kagome and Inu
Yasha.  He hid any astonishment he might have felt behind an expression of barely-contained
anger.  Strangely it did not deter Mrs. Higurashi from trying to explain to him what everything was.
And by the time they reached the house, matters had not improved.  Inu Yasha left the car
before it had even come to a complete stop in the driveway.  As soon as he was able, he removed
the clothes that belonged to Kagome's father and put his yukata, hakama, and haori back on.  Then
he leapt out the open window and into the yard.  He stalked to the shrine, his impatience and anger
palatable.  He shoved the doors apart with more force than necessary and heard something crack.
He ignored it as he stepped inside and with one smooth leap he cleared the railing and went down
the well.

His feet hit the earth and he lifted his gaze to the top only to see the roof of the shrine
instead of the tops of trees.  Damn it! He cursed silently.  He did not want to go back into that
damned house!  He refused! The idea came to him that he could easily put on some of the things
Kagome's mother had gotten him, and leave.  If he couldn't go back to his time, he now at least
could leave Kagome's house.

He changed quickly, after a little lesson in the point of underwear.  And her mother was a
hundred percent correct.  The jeans didn't annoy him like the other pair, and they were also looser,
making them almost comfortable.  He chose a black t-shirt with an odd doodle on the front he'd
found amusing, and put the sandals Kagome's mother had given him earlier back on his feet.  He
grabbed the little ski cap she'd also bought him.  It was black also and had a tiny flame with a
grinning visage on the front.  It covered his ears and was far more comfortable than the silly hat
she'd made him wear earlier.  She'd also gotten him another pair of sunglasses as she called them,
and they were light enough to wear at night but still had a faint brown tint and a reflective sheen that
hid his true eye color.  He looked in the mirror and shook his head in dumb amazement for a few
moments before stepping out of the bathroom.  He almost looked human.  And tomorrow he would
be.  At least then he could ditch the hat, and he wouldn't have to worry about anyone recognizing
him either.  The thought of being accosted by Kagome's chatty friends again made him shiver.
He knew he was overreacting as he stepped out the front door and began to walk.  But he
didn't care.  He was pissed and he needed some time alone.  Kagome had made him out to be a
bastard, he understood of course, he had treated her horribly many times- and yet, he didn't.
He really didn't care what her friends thought.  It was the thought that she might really see
him that way.  He had come to terms with the fact that she would stay with him even until the bitter
end, so why would she say something like that?  He thought she'd known all along...
He never meant to hurt her with his callous words.  Well, almost never.  He thought she
knew.  After his mother's death he was raised with harsh words and hateful glares.  It was hard to
express yourself another way when that was all you really remembered.  But he was learning and
for her sake if nothing else he was trying to be less harsh, less brutal.  It wasn't easy when every
response that first came to him was sarcastic or insulting.  But he still tried.  Didn't she know?
He'd seen the shock play across her face when he insinuated that they were involved.  He'd
also seen the tightly reined anger on the puny boy- Hojo's- face.  And how could he forget the most
important thing he'd seen?
     Desire.
Desire for him in Kagome's eyes.
The scent of her arousal hit him like a wave and he'd eagerly scanned her face to gauge her
reaction.  She seemed almost surprised, and he found himself slightly annoyed.  Then her eyes
dropped to his crotch, color blossomed on her cheeks and another wave of her desire made his
mouth go dry.  So, all it required was wearing human clothes?  They were nearly all form fitting,
showing every natural curve.  He grinned.  So that was it.  His kimono just didn't show her what she
wanted to see, did it?  He let a chuckle slide past his lips as he strolled down the road.
She had hurt him, but...  She had apologized. And most importantly, she had meant it.  As
angry as he'd been, he had seen that. After all the times everyone had accused him of hurting her,
he probably deserved it.
He stopped his quick pace and stared at the cement under his feet as his mind whirled with
incidents of Miroku, Sango, Kaede, and Shippo all cursing him out for upsetting Kagome.  He had
never really stopped to think about it before.  Now it hit him like a ton of bricks.  He remembered
each look of pain that crossed her face whenever he pushed her away, or ran to Kikyo, or denied
that he cared about her up and down in front of everyone.  Each memory speared his heart with a
dull ache and a vague feeling of anxiety.  He had probably hurt her more than anyone...  Remorse
slammed a fist into his chest and he drew a shuddering breath.  How could she even stand him after
all this?  How? It just didn't make sense.  Kikyo would never have accepted the treatment Kagome
had received from him.  Kagome had used that now-hateful word causing him to be slammed into
the earth as a retaliation on many occasions, did that make up for it?  He hurt her so she hurt him.
Although it did seem as though her sadness remained long after the pain from the subjugation spell
wore off..
His brow drew down in confusion.  Why did Kagome put up with him? Why?  She couldn't
possibly.. No. He shook his head.  She had denied that idea as violently as she had earlier.  She
didn't love him, she desired him.
And he couldn't take advantage of that.  He really didn't want to.  Well, maybe a little, but he
knew she would be hurt when he gave his life to Kikyo anyway.  And he didn't want that.  She didn't
deserve it.  He shook his head.  She didn't deserve any of the things he'd said or done to her.  If he
went to her and she did allow him to lay with her, it would be final.  She would be his in every sense
of the word.  And he knew she would never accept that as long as he owed his life to Kikyo.
His hands curled into claws and he snarled in fury, suddenly hating the undead miko.  She
didn't love him any more, if she ever even had in the first place.  Why was he standing here
debating over this?  Kikyo he could never have.  But he could have Kagome.  She wanted him, and
he wanted her.  More than that, if he was completely honest with himself, he cared deeply for her.
Every wound she suffered filled him with rage.  That anyone dared to hurt her made his blood boil.
Of course, he was very protective of Kikyo as well, but he was beginning to think it was only
because he felt he owed her as much.  And the reasons that he owed her were growing more and
more muddled.  He had been foolish enough to fall into Naraku's trap.  But so had Kikyo, and nearly
everyone they had met so far.  So that wasn't their fault, Naraku was just too damn smart.
"Am I just making up excuses?" he wondered aloud.

Kagome's angered grimace warped into a look of pain as she shut her door.  Inu Yasha
hated her.  She could tell.  She was exhausted from all the emotions that had run through her in the
past 24 hours.  The day and each wave of anxiety, fear, or anger blurred together into one painful
quagmire of angst.  But one thing stood out with agonizing clarity.
Gods she had wanted him.  She didn't know what it was, his amber eyes searching hers,
roving over her face and form.  Or the way human clothes clung to him, worshiping every curve.  His
trim body, hardened by years of fighting was too well hidden by his normal, looser clothing.  The
effect was startling, and as the thoughts about how damn good he looked paraded through her head
(not to mention the more forbidden thoughts- of seeing him completely naked) her body repeated it's
earlier response.  She sighed heavily as she grew warm and hyper sensitive between her legs.
Each movement of cloth against her thighs and ass sent tingles of pleasure up her spine.
Her eyes snapped open, banishing her day dream, and for a moment she found herself
ashamed of her reaction.  But only for a moment.  It was true, he was half-demon and when they
had first met he had tried to kill her.  But that didn't really seem to matter to her at the moment, it
hadn't for a long time.
     Hadn't it?
He still wore Kaede's prayer beads.  He was powerless to remove them, and for some
reason no one had ever thought to.  Her mind shifted back to their fight earlier, giving fuel to the
rumors her friends had spread.  If they told Hojo about this, she would.. She would beat them
senseless.  She smiled briefly at the thought, Inu Yasha's wicked attitude must be rubbing off on
me, she thought with a sigh.  She knew she would never do a thing like that, but at the moment she
was still slightly pissed.  But it didn't really matter what she said or did, the damage had already
been done.
Besides, Inu Yasha had a habit of making the prayer beads very necessary.  She thought
back to their last confrontation with Koga with a sigh.  It was like every other time they'd met.  She
couldn't understand their hatred for each other.  That was like a monkey hating an ape.  She giggled
at the comparison but sobered quickly after.  She felt bad about the chain around his neck.
Sometimes it just didn't seem right.  And several times before she'd seen him slyly attempt to
remove it.  And she'd always felt the heat of his glare when he couldn't.
It was just another in the list of things between them.
Well, in her world, he didn't really need it, did he? He had already practically guaranteed
that Hojo wouldn't be stopping by anytime soon.
But then if she took it off, she couldn't make him wear it again later, could she? Better
question: would he even allow it?  She could already hear his snort of disbelief.  She could almost
see the anger blazing from his golden eyes as if he were right in front of her.  She gnawed her lip.
She didn't know what to do.  So I had better do nothing.. She thought, trying to quell her feeling of
dismay.
So, that was fine, that delayed one problem, but there was still another that needed to be
addressed.
She loved Inu Yasha.  Loved him.  It tore her heart whenever he looked at Kikyo, or spoke
her name.  And it was all so stupid!  How could she be jealous of her past reincarnation? She was
jealous  of herself! ..of herself..
Of myself.. Because I was once Kikyo..
How could she be so stupid?  How could any of them?  If Kikyo went to hell with Inu Yasha,
how was she sitting in her home right then?  Kagome slapped her forehead and cursed herself for a
fool.  The answer had always been there, but no one had seen it. She grinned and stood from her
chair, she knew what to say- finally.
The only question was, where was Inu Yasha?

"Lord Sessho Maru.  The demon Naraku wishes to speak with you!"
Sessho Maru and Irin's attention was drawn away from the fish she had caught and over to
Naraku's golem.
"Jaken, you are as blind as ever, and Naraku, you are ever the coward."    Sessho Maru
said, his features expressionless.  He slowly stood, cautioning Irin with a wave of his hand to be still.
"I merely come with an offer, Sessho Maru, I find it more convenient to send a Golem.  I
have too many plans which need my attention."   The hanyou smiled bitterly.
"What is this offer, then?" Sessho Maru wondered aloud.
"I seek to take Inu Yasha off your hands.  He has caused myself much trouble, and yourself
I imagine.  I do seem to remember giving you a human arm implanted with a shikon shard to replace
the one he severed.  Or was I mistaken?" Sessho Maru sneered, this was an old game, and one he
knew too well to be played the fool.
"How do you suppose you might β€˜take Inu Yasha off my hands'?"    Sessho Maru spoke softly,
the deadly edge to his voice not lost on Naraku.
"You are his elder brother.  I merely seek your permission to take him."
"Ah you know the rules do you?" Sessho Maru's eyes glinted with malice, and Naraku
smiled, the same patronizing sneer that had adorned Sessho Maru face moments before.
     ""I've learned a few things."
"Inu Yasha does not.  He did not know our father.  He is a bastard half-breed." Sessho
Maru's grim smile returned as Naraku's expression grew dark.
"He need not know a thing.  All I need is your permission."  Naraku maintained, his smug
expression returning.
"Very well.  It is given to you Naraku.  Inu Yasha now is in your care.  Do as you please with
him, I care not for half-human trash."  Naraku scowled and his joy was temporarily crushed.  Hatred
for Sessho Maru blinded him for ruining his moment, then faded to deal with later.  His eyes settled
on Irin, still holding the fish.  Then a hand was around his throat.
"This one is off limits.  And in this you will obey.  You know the rules, then you know this:
You owe me now and if you cross me or mine, you will suffer forever."  Naraku's eyes locked with
those of Sessho Maru and he could see the promise in his eyes.  This one, he would not cross until
he was full demon.  Then he would be taken care of.
"I will obey, Sessho Maru." he said with a bowed head, and quickly disappeared into the
forest.
"What was that?" Irin gasped as soon as she could no longer see him.  Sessho Maru didn't
respond right away.
"He is a great many things.  And if Inu Yasha is incapable of dealing with him, I will destroy
him myself."

Kagome headed out the back door and saw Inu Yasha sitting at the base of goshinboku, his
eyes dark and thoughtful.  She hurried to his side.
"What's wrong, Inu Yasha, are you still mad about what my friends said-" he shook his head
as the went to kneel before him, grabbed her and pulled her into his lap.  She pulled the little ski cap
off his head and rubbed his ears.
"Kagome." his voice was low and had a strange timbre in it she'd never heard before.  "Why
are you still with me? And don't say the Shikon no Tama, you said you didn't care about it plenty of
times."  She felt her heart begin to pound in her chest, she knew he wanted the truth from her, and
that he probably already knew the answer.  But now he needed to hear it.  But why now?  She grit
her teeth and shook her head.
"Because.." she trailed off afraid to meet his eyes.
"Because why?" He murmured, in yet another voice she'd never heard him use, this one
cause her body to break out in goose flesh and her breathing quicken.  Oh god.. She thought, I hope
he takes this well.. She thought screwing up her nerve, she raised her eyes to his, suddenly craving
his reaction.
     "Because.. I love you."
