Hey I'm taking over this fic, written by an author whose work I admire, Pareathe. She couldn't finish it and I couldn't have that! So with her permission I'm finishing it. SUMMARY: In Pareathe's own words: Inu Yasha and Kagome already spend most of their time together, gathering shards of the Shikon no Tama around feudal Japan, but Inu Yasha hasn't been able to come to a true resolution about his feelings or their relationship. But one week stuck in Kagome's time, without youkai to hunt or jewel shards to collect, will make him see what he couldn't before.

Chapter 6 - Day 4 (early morning)

She had just fallen asleep, he could tell by her breathing.  He sighed in relief, opened his eyes, and looked down at her as she lay curled into him.  She was beautiful, and she was his.  He couldnā€™t thank the gods enough.  It was hard enough believing it had finally happened.  He didnā€™t want to sleep.  He wanted to lie there and hold her all night and not miss a second.  He wished briefly that heā€™d had the restraint to hold off until Naraku was dead and gone and he didnā€™t have to worry for her safety quite so much.  But what they had done was irreversible.
But he didnā€™t care.  And he certainly didnā€™t regret it.  She loved him! She loved him and she had said so.  The last time heā€™d heard those words had been so long ago, when his poor mother Izayoi had still lived.  In fact Izayoi had been the only one to say it to him, until now. Until Kagome.
Kikyo had never proclaimed to love anyone other than her sister Kaede.  She had sworn to him to not let another man touch her, and heā€™d thought about it afterward.  Heā€™d been too outraged to hear that Naraku of all people lusted after her to think on it at the time.  But as heā€™d reflected after Kikyo had disappeared (and Kagome had run off after seeing the whole thing) he didnā€™t feel the same for Kikyo.  He never would.  But he refused to let Naraku hurt her again.  And he knew Kagome wanted to help, but he also knew that it hurt her to do it.  And he wanted more than anything to spare her the pain. He knew that if he kept her away it would be better in the end.
But Kagome came back.  And he hadnā€™t realized how much his decision had hurt him until he saw her sweet face again.  The relief heā€™d felt that sheā€™d even wanted to speak to him again had lifted a thousand pounds off his shoulders.  And that was when heā€™d begun to realize how much she meant to him.  And when she asked to stay by his side until the end...  It was then that it became clear how much he meant to her, as well.
Heā€™d smelled her tears even as he approached, that had dissolved any thought on his part to keep her away.  He hated it when she cried, it always caused him to feel an echo of the pain that heā€™d felt when Sessho Maru had run him through with his fist.  It was not nearly as bad, but it hurt nevertheless.  And it only happened when Kagome cried.  It always happened when she cried, even if she didnā€™t cry in front of him.  Even if he smelled only faint traces of tears.
Heā€™d never seen Kikyo cry.  Not even after she was resurrected.  He had sensed her awful sadness many times, but never even smelled her tears.  He didnā€™t know how she maintained such control over her emotions, he was impressed by her strength before his fifty year sleep.  Now she seemed too cold and distant to shed tears.
She would never cry for him- but Kagome would- she already had.

He had gone to see Kagome, to say goodbye.  He couldnā€™t bear to hurt her anymore.  And she had been at the well, waiting for him.  Heā€™d been surprised to see her, looking so beautiful and serene, and then the scent of her tears hit him.  And the smell of the soap sheā€™d used to try to wash the salt away- knowing he would realize how much seeing him with Kikyo had hurt her when he smelled her tears.  The pain had sliced through his heart like a dull knife.  I never want to hurt you Kagome, never! Forgive me! His mind had howled while sheā€™d said she thought about things in her time.  About him and her and Kikyo.
Heā€™d told her then what heā€™d always meant to- she was the only person heā€™d ever trusted, even Kikyo had never gained that from him.  She made him feel light, and.. Calm.  With Kikyo he had always been on guard.  Her power had always made him slightly nervous- knowing she could purify him from existence didnā€™t sit well with him.  Something had made him unable to fully trust her.  But Kagome was different.  He knew she would die before she hurt him.  But he had to protect Kikyo still, even give his life if it came to that.  And Kagome understood.  That had made him happy and miserable at once.  He was happy she understood, but at the same time he was miserable that she understood something he was having difficulty with and that she accepted it.
Was she only saying it to make him happy?  She would if she thought it would help, no matter how it hurt her.
Then she had said something that had nearly shattered his heart:
ā€œCan I stay by your side?ā€  He hadnā€™t known how to respond as she told him how she was not Kikyo, was not like her at all, even how she hated her and tried not to.  ā€œBut she and I are alike in one way,ā€ sheā€™d said.  ā€œIn that we both couldnā€™t bear to never see you again.ā€  It was the last thing that really registered until her hand slipped into his.  And after a moments hesitation he squeezed her hand back, as if to assure himself that she was really here with him.  Then she urged him to walk and they met up with the others and everything seemed to go back to normal.
But it didnā€™t.  At least, not for him.  For weeks that scene replayed itself over and over in his mind.  He looked at her differently from then on.  Not just as Kagome, the one person he trusted completely, but he began to see her as Kagome, a beautiful, brave, and intelligent girl who he would die for in an instant if he needed.  Of course that would never happen as long as he had anything to say about it.
But this always left him torn.  Kikyo was dead.  He could not save her, he could only avenge her.  Kagome was his responsibility, his to protect and he would gladly die to save her life as well.  But he couldnā€™t very well die for both of them.  And he knew Kagome didnā€™t want him to die... for her or anyone.  Kikyo wanted him to throw his life away and follow her to hell- didnā€™t that tell him something?
He sighed and shook his head.  He did not plan to abandon Kikyo entirely, he would kill Naraku and avenge her death, but he didnā€™t think he could do more than that.  He had no wish to die and go to hell with her.  He wanted a life with Kagome.  He wanted to protect her and keep her with him- none of the pathetic humans he knew could handle the job (not the heā€™d allow it anyway).  Her spiritual powers and the Shikon no Tama made her a target.

Any time she got hurt his heart froze until he had rescued her himself and made damn sure she was alright.  Any time she cried it felt like a knife twisting his guts.  When she got angry at him, he still lashed out (mostly to keep up appearances), but was immediately swamped with guilt afterwards.  When she returned to her time he felt so alone.  He tried to act normal, but he couldnā€™t hide it and he knew it.  He would snap at the others or storm off in a huff at the drop of a hat.  And more often than not heā€™d head to the God Tree and keep an eye on the well until she returned
Soon all he could think about was Kagome.  The only time he thought of the jewel was when someone else mentioned it.  He didnā€™t even want it anymore.  Not if he.. He shivered at the thought and buried his nose in Kagomeā€™s hair and inhaled deeply.  Even with his dull human senses in control he could still smell her and sighed in relief as her wonderful scent chased away the unease brought on by his dark thoughts.
He never wanted to be a demon again if it meant that he would be the cruel mindless beast heā€™d transformed into those few times.  He smiled softly thinking of Kagome at his side even after the horrible things heā€™d done.  He had smelled Shippo, Sango, and Mirokuā€™s fear after the incident with the moth youkai.  But Kagome had not been afraid of him, even after watching him murder about fifteen bandits even after they begged for their lives.  He shivered again and Kagome mumbled in her sleep, snuggling closer to him.  He placed a light kiss upon her forehead and smiled again.
She had not been afraid.  She had left the others behind and went to his side to comfort him when he needed it the most, but was too afraid of himself and what heā€™d done to even seek it.  She had wrapped her arms around him and rested her head on his shoulder as they stared out at the water where heā€™d tried to wash the smell of human blood off his hands.  He had wanted to turn into her embrace, but at the time he had been too horrified with himself to do more than put his hand over hers and cling tight.  He didnā€™t dare do anything else out of fear.  And that fear had nearly suffocated him.
He had withdrawn after that, but little by little she eroded his caution with her smile and the comfort she always gave him without trying.  He could think of nothing but her again as Koga continued to drop by  and try to gain her affection.  Each time his jealousy seemed to grow worse as the things he wanted to do to the wolf for daring to touch her grew more and more violent in nature.
The thought made him hold his breath for a moment.  Kagome was his now, and the wolf would know it as soon as he smelled her.  He wouldnā€™t try anything after that.. Would he?  A furious snarl escaped him at the thought and Kagome tensed in his arms, causing him to hastily swallow to sound to avoid waking her.
Iā€™ll rip his bowels from his belly if he so much as LOOKS at her! He thought with a scowl.  When Kagome woke up, he would have to say something about Koga.  She had to say something to the wolf prince to get him to back off, Or so help me I wonā€™t be held responsible for my actions! He thought.
Then another thing occurred to him.  Would Kikyo try and harm Kagome when she found out?  The thought drove another snarl out and Kagome started and began to murmur.  He bit his lip and smoothed her hair gently, trying to keep her from waking.  His reaction to the thought of Kikyo hurting Kagome was almost as violent as the thought of Koga trying to take her from him.
ā€œShit.ā€ he murmured.  That was certainly unexpected.  Apparently he would have to have a talk with Kikyo too.  ā€œHow is that gonna work?ā€  ā€˜Gee Kikyo, I can fight Naraku for you and kill him, but if you so much as look at Kagome funny, Iā€™ll rip your eyes out.ā€™  He froze in shock, that certainly put things into perspective.  He hadnā€™t realized how much his attitude toward Kikyo would change.  He held his hand up and inspected it in the moonlight, his nails were still short.  ā€œStill human.ā€ So will these feelings get stronger as a hanyou? He wondered with a sigh.  They will, I know they will..  He would need to speak to Kikyo alone, and Kami help him if Kagome saw them.  Or maybe I should explain myself even before she has a chance?  Then she wonā€™t get upset if she sees me talking to Kikyo, right? He knew she would listen to him, that was one of the things the loved about her, She wouldnā€™t yell at him until he gave he cause to.  He had difficulty with that at first but came to realize that when she fought with him or screamed ā€œOsuwari!ā€ sending him face first into the dirt, it was his fault.  He knew that- even if he didnā€™t find out why she was pissed and what heā€™d done to cause it until later- she would never treat him badly unless he deserved it.
He hadnā€™t realized that claiming Kagome as his would change anything other than their relationship.  He hadnā€™t realized it would affect Koga and Kikyo as well.  He felt suddenly ashamed of himself.  Iā€™m such a selfish prick, how many times has Kagome said it?  His feelings toward Kikyo had steadily been changing  but this final shove toward platonic had caught him off guard.   If he had been unaware of Kagomeā€™s feelings.. Would he still love Kikyo?  He thought back and slowly shook his head.  This would have happened eventually... Kikyo never had a chance.  Because now I know for sure..  And had things been different, had Kagome been in Kikyoā€™s place she never would have shot me with that arrow.
He knew that was true, even before sheā€™d told him she loved him.
Once heā€™d been facing down another bow and arrow and it was in Kagomeā€™s hands.  She had been performing under a curse which manipulated her body to do the bidding of a Black Priestess working for Naraku.  A tainted jewel shard was also forcing her to act.  And still she had refused to hurt him.  She had pleaded for Inu Yasha to run as tears leaked from her eyes.  Even as she drew back the bow string and took aim, she begged him to escape with his life.  He smiled at the thought, but then heā€™d been terrified.  She could easily purify him, and then who would protect her?  He had dodged the arrow that would wipe him from existence if it touched him because he couldnā€™t bear the thought of leaving her to face this alone.  He couldnā€™t run from her even if his life was at stake, how could she not know?
As Kagome had clung weakly to him after her last arrow was spent he found himself feeling bitter towards Kikyo.  Kagome had once again proven that she valued him a great deal more than anyone had thus far.  Kikyo had never even thought of being with Inu Yasha unless he was a human.  He knew Kagome didnā€™t care, because heā€™d seen the hurt on her face when someone insulted his mixed blood.  Kikyo had never said a thing in his defense regarding his hanyou blood, if anything she had agreed albeit silently.  After her death and resurrection she had changed her attitude, and he realized why with a frown.  She was even worse than a hanyou such as him to any humanā€™s eyes.  She stole the souls of the dead to animate her ā€œfleshā€ with no care or regard, he lived on plain and simple food like everyone else.  He didnā€™t steal souls to live, or feast on human flesh and blood.  He needed only the same things humans needed to survive, and they could never begrudge him that.  Those who used the souls of the dead were the worst kind of demon or sprit.  Huamns hated and feared them above all else because the soul was prized above all.  To have it stolen and put to use was an abomination.  He always felt it when she drew near- a strange nameless dread that filled him with revulsion.  It was the souls within her begging to be free, he always ignored it.  It was even easy sometimes when she directed such furious hate at him in the beginning.  Hatred he was sure he didnā€™t deserve- not after what sheā€™d done to him!  But lately the feeling was more powerful within him.  He had even flinched the last time she tried to touch him.  A portion of Kagomeā€™s soul was locked within her still- souls of innocent young women and girls were trapped to keep her animated as well.  He soul stealing demons hovered about her at all times.  He never would have thought Kikyo capable of such and awful thing, which made him wonder: How well did he really know her at all?
Her coolness and aloofness in life heā€™d always assumed was a deep melancholy.  But perhaps she had always been so cold and calculating, and her feeling for him merely lust.  Or perhaps it was her death that had changed her?  He wanted to believe that more than anything.  Then she was still innocent in his eyes, and even if he didnā€™t feel the same for her, it hurt much less this way.  If she had really never cared for him.. If she had only thought to used him to free her of the burden of the Shikon no Tama..  He would let Naraku have her.  He winced and closed his eyes as his vision suddenly blurred with bitter tears.  He couldnā€™t think like that.  He couldnā€™t be like that.  If he really felt that way he didnā€™t deserve Kagome.  She didnā€™t need someone full of hate poisoning her life.  He shook his head and pulled her closer with a sigh.
He admonished himself for thinking such things without knowing the whole truth.  He would reserve his judgment for the time when he and Kikyo were face to face again.  If that time ever comes.. He wondered about the well again and shrugged.  Naraku would have to open it eventually.  Until he did he was free to enjoy his time alone with the lovely girl in his arms.  He closed his eyes.

Kagome sighed again and rolled over so that her back was pressed against his chest, smacked her lips, mumbled in contentment, and wiggled in such a way that her soft rear was rubbing against his crotch.  He groaned softly as she snuggled closer.  She was arousing him in her sleep!
ā€œNot fair.ā€ he whispered in her ear.  He grinned and reached up to rub her breasts and belly and her sudden soft moan had him gnawing his lip as he debated over whether he should wake her or not.  The room was growing lighter, and they only had an hour, two or three at the very most before someone woke up.  He slid his hand down and eased a finger between the warm folds of flesh between her legs and began to slowly stroke her.  He soft whimper was music to his ears and she suddenly leaned back and raised her arms high as she stretched.  He began to stoke her faster and she gasped, reaching behind her to massage furry ears that just werenā€™t there.  She froze and the scent of her fear hit him.  He tensed and spun her around in his grasp.
ā€œItā€™s me, Iā€™m still human, remember?ā€ he said, seeing her confusion.  She put a hand to her chest and let out a breath.
ā€œI thought it was and then I forgot what today was I guess.  I thought you were someone else and freaked out.ā€ she laughed shakily.
ā€œIā€™m sorry.  I should have left you alone and let you sleep.ā€ she smiled softly at the concern on his face and leaned forward to place her lips upon his.
ā€œItā€™s alright.  No harm done.ā€ she smiled ā€œI just wanted to play with you ears.ā€
ā€œYou can soon.ā€ he murmured and began trailing kisses down her neck to her chest.  Her breathy sigh was permission enough to continue and he slid his hand up and down her thigh and then again began to massage the tiny quivering bud between her legs.  Her gasps and moans spurring him on he quickly brought her to climax.   He gathered her in his arms and kissed her as she quivered with ecstacy.
Suddenly the smell of blood hit him.  It was faint at first and he couldnā€™t tell if it was him or her that the scent was coming from.  He raised his head and saw the sky growing lighter.  His vision was growing sharper and he raised one arm to check for cuts and scratches.  Finding none he began to sniff at Kagome.
ā€œYour bleeding.ā€ he stated as she began to breathe normally.
    ā€œWhat?ā€ she murmured sleepily.
ā€œGet up.ā€ he said, the scent of blood was growing stronger by the moment and he was starting to panic.  Heā€™d hurt her- he knew it!  She groaned and tried to roll onto her side facing away from him.  He gently caught her arm.  ā€œNo Kagome.  Get up, now.ā€  She turned to face him, her face set in a beautiful pout.
    ā€œIā€™m fine, Inu Yasha.ā€
ā€œGet up, now.ā€ he commanded again and when she scowled at him he snarled, rose to his feet and grabbed her forearms pulling her off the bed and setting her on her feet. The smell wasnā€™t just on her- it was on him as well, he had to know...
The light was still to dim and his senses were still too dulled for him to see any cuts on her but as his eyes traveled down her body he gasped and staggered back.
ā€œOh.. Gods.ā€ he choked.  Kagome heard the pain and fear in his voice and it immediately snapped her out of her sleepy annoyance.  Inu Yasha stared at her in horror, his eyes shining in the pale light.
ā€œWhat? What is it?ā€ Kagome asked, her voice a soft whisper.  He raised a trembling hand and pointed to her waist before shivering and covering his face with his shaking hands.  She stared down at herself and gasped.
Blood was coming from between her legs to spatter down the inside of her thighs.  But the only pain she had felt was... She smiled- sometimes she forgot that Inu Yasha probably had no clue what humans went through - especially women.  She knelt before him with a sigh.
ā€œInu Yasha- this happens when a girl loses her virginity most times- you didnā€™t hurt me Iā€™m fine.ā€  She wrapped her arms around him as he trembled before her, his hands still hiding his face.  ā€œNow calm down, please.  I swear to the gods that this is normal and it would have happened even if you werenā€™t a half demon.ā€ he raised his head to meet her gaze.  The pain and fear in his eyes made her sigh sadly and pull him close.  ā€œPlease donā€™t be upset.  Itā€™s ok I promise you.ā€ she murmured, slowly rubbing his back.  He nodded quickly and she stood tugging his hands to get him to rise.  ā€œWe have to shower.   And then I have to wash my sheets.  AND-ā€œ she waited until he was looking at her.  ā€œWe need to finish before my mom and grandpa wake up.ā€

TBC..

Up next- Kagomeā€™s Grandfather causes trouble for the couple (Inu Yasha in particular)
